Need informant of death in 2001

Post by casserole » Thu Oct 15, 2009 7:55 pm

Hello Folks,

Is there someway I can find out the name of the informant of a death in Scotland in 2001 without buying the death certificate? I want to find out if the informant was a son or daughter. The deceased was my grandfather's niece. I have found a marriage for her but no one knows if she had any children. If she had then I am hoping that they may have some family information about our greatgrandparents who were Russian Jews and who came to Scotland in 1885.

Am I right in saying that I can't search on Scotlandspeople for births using the mother's maiden name? I have searched using the father's surname but there are soooooo many.

Many thanks

Hi Casserole,

To find the details from a recent certificate such as the 2001 document you are asking about you need to buy an extract or go to the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh (or one of their outposts around Scotland); or have someone visit one of these places on your behalf.

On the ScotlandsPeople website, there is no search using the mother's maiden surname. In the ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh you can search using the child's surname and mother's maiden surname for years since 1927 (the current start year of that index).

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Casserole

The only birth records which can be searched using the mother's maiden name are those where the child was illegitimate; if either parents were not married at the time of the birth, or the mother was married but her husband was not the father of the child. In both these cases the child will be listed under the mother's own surname. This does not look like it will apply in your case though as you have stated that you have found the marriage, so Andrew is correct.

Best wishes

Thank you Andrew and Lesley for your replies.

I'll put my thinking cap on re finding someone to get the information for me in Scotland. I live in Kent.

Thank you again, much appreciated.

It is six and half a dozen really -
The standard cost of entry to the Scotlands People centre to look at the death certificate is £10 for a day. The cost of the death certificate is £10.....

Best wishes
