Went back today to check on a sibling of my 5X Great Grandmother- David Reid and discovered a family i never knew he had, problem is that it brings me more questions than answers (as usual)
David was born Kilchenzie, Argyl 1841 although he refers to nis birthplace as Campbeltown in all other documents. I have him on the 1841 and 1851 censuses with his parents, going along nicely so far.
In 1861 i think i have him listed as a Seaman on the Vessel Robert in Dundonald Parish, Ayrshire (this is from Ancestry).
1871 sees him as a lodger with a wife Ellen Reid in Campbeltwon, he is listed as a seaman , so im pretty sure it is him.Wife is born Ireland around 1854.(Again from Ancestry)
1881 sees him in Glasgow with wife Ellen and a tribe of Kids, Elizabeth Born 1873 Ireland, Agnes 1877 Campbeltown, Samuel 1879 Campbeltown, William J 1880 Campbeltown.(Again Ancestry)
1891 sees an Ellen Reid in Anderston Glasgow, with an ever expanding tribe of kids all of th eabove bar William, but also including Roseann b 1885 Glasgow and Ellen aged 11 months born Glasgow, but no hubby, listed as wife on Ancestry, so dont know if David is at sea or dead.
Is where it goes all to pot, Elizabeth is married and to Henry Martin and livign in Glasgow, along with Samuel and Agnes, but no sign of mother Ellen, baby Ellen or Roseann on the census.
I have found Samuel's BC and his parents marriage is listed as Belfast 16/8/1870, also his DC in 1957 shows both parents as predictably dead.
Elizabeth MC in 1894 shows the correct parents David listed as dead and Ellen as possibly alive, no family members are witnesses.
Question is where did the rest of the family go? I cant even find BC for Rosean or Ellen in Glasgow or a DC for David , although SP is showing a maritime one in 1893 but need to order the copy, no image, can any help find these people?

Just a small point but it is Samuel and wee Ellen (Helen - have you tried that for a birth?) who are with sister Elizabeth in 1901.
Perhaps Rose Ann and Ellen (could she be registered as Helen?) senior died before 1901.
Regards,
Annette

Hi David
I'm maybe off on a tangent but there is a Rose Ann (two words) Reid born in Lanarkshire (Anderston) in 1884. Could that be her?
Best wishes
Lesley

Re: Help with Reids
Ooops yes it is Ellen not Agnes no the cesnus, my excitement at new family gets me again.
I will check for Rose Ann in 1884 in Andeston (99% sur eit is her) as the family stayed there, i have managed to find Samuel's marriage in 1907 so need to get on to SP to download it to see if the parents were dead.
Have checked Ellen/Helen combination to no avail, even tried wildcards (*el*en re*d) on SP but still no definate or likely cases.
I was thinking of visiting the Mitchell to check for Poor Law Applications as it might give me when David Reid died
Thanks again

Re: Help with Reids
If she was Irish and 1 of the children was born in Ireland,
it's very likely that some of the family returned there
esp. if she was widowed with a young family.
Could be worth checking the 1911 census in Ireland for some of them

Hi Wlilma
Thats what i was thinking , but its a big gap between 1891 and 1911 and she may have remarried, well best to search and see if she is there

Re: Help with Reids
Just a wee update , went and invested in more credits for SP
I have found the DC of Samuel in 1957 in Gorbals, Glasgow, he was married to a Sarah Orrocks in Glasgow 1907 , the marrigae states mother Ellen still alive , and baby Ellen being an informant.
I then look ofr Ellen (mother) DC and found her eventually in the Gorbals as well , dying in 1/10/1943.
Also managed to find Agnes' MC to a Robert Ferrier in 1895 in Gorbals, Glasgow.
Still no trace of Ellen(mother) on the 1901 census or of Roseann(e) DC, i havent even tried to search of Baby Ellen's DC or MC yet to many combinations!!!
