Post by chickcorbybred » Thu Dec 03, 2009 1:22 pm

](*,) I have tried for ages to find information on my great uncle Robertson Mathew {yes the first name is Robertson} dob 15 August 1861. Last information 1881 census, has him living at 5 Rose Street, Peterhead {aged 20} with his parents and siblings. He was a ships carpenter, did he move abroad or die at sea, I know all deaths at sea are not registered with Scotlands People. Also trying to find where his brothers families went, last details were in the 1901 census living at 47,St Peters St, Peterhead.Head, Charlotte Matthew {nee Hill} widow of William Matthew {ships carpenter} , Lizzie dob 4th Oct 1881, Lottie dob 1st Oct 1882 {married John Creighton 1st June 1906, still living at 47, St Peters St, and moved to SA }, Maggie dob 5th July 1884, Thomas dob 26th Dec 1889, Catherine Matthew {nee Hill} married to Alexander Matthew {chief officer merchant service}, Alexander dob 18th June 1886, William dob 6th Feb 1888, David dob 13th March 1891, Charlotte dob 3rd Sept 1894, Hilda F dob 18th Sept 1897. The surname is spelt with 1 and 2 "T's" Any help would be appreciated.

Hello C B Mathew,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]

In April 1908 a Scot named Robertson Matthew, Occupation Ship Fitter, arrived in Glasgow from New York on the Furnessia. No age is given.

On 16 October 1909, he was headed back from Glasgow to New York, age 48. However, since he claims to be a U.S. citizen, there is no further information. I have tried to find him in the U.S. but so far no luck.

Robertson Matthew the father arrived in New South Wales, Australia on June 15th 1875.
Station: Carpenter
Age: 44
Of what nation: Peterhead

My guess is that the 1908 and 1909 records are of the younger Robertson Matthew, who has been sailing around on various ships, missing the censuses each time

What do you think?

All the best,
Sarah

There is also a Robertson Mathew, age 81 who dies in 1911 in Peterhead. No image is available, but you can contact SP and ask for details.

Hi again,

Google Alexander Mathew, Peterhead, Scotland

Look for The Victorian Law Reports by Victoria Supreme Court, 1906 and click on it. You should get a page of the book with the will of James Mathew, tobacconist, residing at Daylesford, Victoria.

This was Robertson Jr. brother James and he is willing money and belongings to his nephew Alexander.

At least part of the family ended up in Australia.

The link was extremely long and I don't know how to shorten them correctly so I didn't try to post it!

Edit: Try this one! http://tinyurl.com/y9qcfgj

Hi C B Mathew,

ScotlandsPeople shows deaths of 3 Robertson Mathew, but none of them are a match for a birth in the area of 1861.
  • 1 1898 MATHEW ROBERTSON M 0 PETERHEAD /ABERDEEN 232/01 0152 VIEW
    2 1911 MATHEW ROBERTSON M 81 PETERHEAD /ABERDEEN 232/01 0045 No Image
    3 1917 MATHEW ROBERTSON M 22 MARINE REGISTER /MINOR RECORDS 146/MR 0244 No Image
SP also has 3 births for Robertson Mathew.
  • 1 1861 MATHEW ROBERTSON M PETERHEAD /ABERDEEN 232/00 0223 VIEW
    2 1895 MATHEW ROBERTSON M PETERHEAD /ABERDEEN 232/01 0308 VIEW
    3 1897 MATHEW ROBERTSON M PETERHEAD /ABERDEEN 232/01 0531 VIEW
It looks like these should be 4 people, assuming the age at death is correct for the one who died in 1911. The two 1890's born Robertson Mathew appear to be cousins (grandchildren of Robertson Mathew of c1830), but neither of them son of Robertson Mathew of 1861.

One marriage shows up on SP for a Robertson Mathew, presumably the one born around 1830, who died in 1911.

The online IGI (births up to 1874) shows 7 children to Robertson Mathew and Eliza Robertson.
  • ALEXANDER MATTHEW - Christening: 09 DEC 1854 Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
WILLIAM MATTHEW - Birth: 25 OCT 1856 Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
WILLIAM ROBERTSON MATTHEW - Birth: 26 APR 1859 Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
ROBERTSON MATHEW - Birth: 15 AUG 1861 Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
ELIZA ANN MATTHEW - Birth: 09 JUN 1864 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire
JAMES COW MATTHEW - Birth: 07 JAN 1869 Peterhead, Aberdeenshire
JOHN SCROGGIE MATTHEW - Birth: 31 MAR 1872 Peterhead, Aberdeenshire

All the best,

Hello All,

It looks as though the Victorian Law Reports 1906 is only available as a snippet view outside of the USA. However it, and the probate papers, can apparently be seen for free via this Public Record Office Victoria page. Maybe some of the others are there as well. http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/ ... earchid=54

There’s a small item in the Aberdeen Weekly Journal, Wednesday, April 9, 1884, that may be of small interest.
Reports on Licensing Courts under the heading “Peterhead.”
“The first application was for Mrs. M’Rae of Joss for a grocer’s porter and ale licence for the house 5 Roanheads. Mr. W. L. Scott appeared on her behalf. The application was granted. An application by Mr. Robertson Matthew for a similar licence to his shop in St Andrew Street was also granted.”

In 1884, in Scotland, a licensed grocer, although prohibited from selling liquor on Sundays or outside the hours between 8 A.M. and 11 P.M. on other days, could stay open all hours. This prohibition, and the requirement that liquor sold there be consumed off the premises, was subject to widespread abuse. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=gYQ ... +grocer%22 (The figures in the third snippet, page 179, - if that's what you're seeing - were for Glasgow).

Hope that’s sort of interesting,
Alan

Magic?

Re: the will

I managed to copy and paste it into a Works doc. on my computer, so if CB wants a copy of just the will I can email it.

This looks like an article in a law review concerning a probate case for a will presented in a non-typical format. When it was typewritten, the copy filled a single page right down to the bottom so the names and signatures of James Mathew and his witnesses and lawyer had to be written in the margin on the left side. Why it couldn't have been typed on two pages I don't know. Anyway, evidently a question was raised at probate and the court decided to accept the will as presented.

Along with Alexander Mathew, his nephew the will mentions:

Agnes Jeffrey Irson of Buligal New South Wales who received 250 pounds sterling and "personal effects to wit my trunk clothing photographs and private papers."

Martha Jeffrey Mackley of Hay, NSW 250 pounds sterling.

Maria Tracey (his housekeeper)of Daylesford, NSW 150 pounds sterling

Margaret Tracey of Daylesford, NSW 100 pounds sterling

Alexander Mathew nephew of 47 St. Peter's Street, Peterhead Scotland 200 pounds sterling

and the residue to Alexander Mathew in trust for himself and his sisters and brothers (or brothers' wives in event of the brothers being dead) to be divided equally among them.

The estate consisted of: "property and belongings tenements and hereditaments household furniture ready money investments goods and chattels and real and personal estate and effects"

The bequest to Margaret Tracey was to be paid to Agnes Jeffrey Irson to be invested by her for the benefit of Margaret until Margaret turned 22 years old, then given over to Margaret.

Sounds like James did alright for himself!

Thanks everyone, well Robertson sen c1830/1911 was in Australia as ships carpenter but returned to Scotland and became a grocer {1881 census} yet by '91 he was a ships carpenter again, he was my gt grandfather.
Robertson 1897/98 was my fathers cousin.
Robertson 1895/1917 was my fathers brother.
The ROBERTSON {1861} I am looking for was my fathers uncle, I will have to try and find where he finally settled and weather he married and had a family.
Carol I would appreciate a copy of James' will as it may fill in a few gaps. My e-mail address is c.mathew1ATntlworld.com
Thanks again everyone you have been a great help and I would be grateful for any further information.
Chick Mathew
