Help reading dc for John Rait 1858

What I need help with is the name of the informant. I think it is Jean someone, aunt.

Connon, Cameron, and Duncan are all in this family, but it could be something else?

Another possibility is Cannon, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.

I'd go for Cameron.

In 1871 what appears to be Jean Cameron/Christie's daughter Jean (born 1855 at St Nicholas) is living with John's mother, Isabella Rait, at 19 Virginia Street.

By the way in case you haven't seen it - Isabella is at 19 Virginia Street in 1861 transcribed as Rool at Ancestry.

I was just about to try again for 1881 and 1891 to see who was with Isabella Rait. Poor woman lost her husband in 1848 and two other children between 1850 and 1852. John Jr. was her last, but he went to sea like his father. She lived to 84 and died in 1908!

I was hoping for Jean Duncan myself because she was my 2x great grandmother Ann Rait Munro's sister so John Jr. would definitely have been ours along with his father and the rest of the family. Ann had a brother John, but I hadn't been able to find any information proving him up so to speak until I found him on another family tree on Ancestry. This information is unsourced so I'm still looking for a solid connection. John Sr. doesn't show on a census because he and Isabella married in Nov. of 1841 and he died before 1851. I'll have to buy the marriage OPR next month. I'm way over budget on SP for this month already!

Hi Carol,

More money I know but when the credit card allows maybe a look at William's papers after his death might show something to connect the families. Perhaps he left something to his son's widow.

Don't quite know why there are 2 indexed as they appear to be the same thing. Hopefully somebody with more knowledge about these things can explain.

Hi again,

Already have the one of the two sets of papers--the will. John and brother Charles aren't mentioned by name. William Jr. gets the lease for Cloverhill. Margaret and Jean/Jane get money for "services rendered" to William Sr. What's left is divided among the children except that Ann's portion was decreased by the amount of the money her husband John Munro had borrowed from his father-in-law!

What makes me question the John in the other family tree is that he was a shipmaster and that would have been a first for my family. Everyone was connected with farming or was a carpenter/joiner. But maybe John didn't like either one and went off to sea?

Found your Isabella "Rool" in 1861. Also found Isabella in 1891 with her birthplace suddenly Newburgh which is what it says on her gravestone too. Did you by chance find Isabella in 1881? SP has her, but I can't get Ancestry to cooperate. Care to guess at Yanteslose, Fifeshire from 1861? I'm going to Google that one!

I think I found Isabella in 1881. In 1901, she has a "niece" Minnie Connon living with her so I finally searched for Minnie in 1881. Minnie is 2yrs old and living with her mother Jane Connon. Isabella Rait, "aunt" is living there also. Small problem with her age. Isabella is now 32 and was born in 1849--in Foveran! She is a Publican. Can't wait until I get some credits so I can see what SP has her down as!

No credits to check but a search at SP for Isabella Rait at St Nicholas in 1881 has 1 age 50!

Well, so much for my resolve! I bought some credits and looked at the 1881 census on SP. It's definitely Isabella and I don't know where Ancestry got their birthdate and age from! The SP census clearly shows her age as 50 though there is a mark over it. No way does it look like 32! She's a widow, aunt, publican and living at the same address as shown on the Ancestry version with Jane Connon and daughter.

As for the OPR for the marriage of John Raitt and Isabella Christie, I apparently bought it sometime previously because it was paid for so that only cost me one credit! No luck with the witnesses, but they were a bit startling. One was William Milne, seaman which happens to have been the name of my 3x grandfather on the Clerihew side only he died before 1840 and John and Isabella were married in 1841. Also, the minister who married them was John Longmuir, Minister of the Mariner's Church. My great grandmother on the Clerihew side was Isabella Longmuir! Different families, but some coincidences!

Now I have to start sorting out Connons to see if there is a connection there or it's just another coincidence!

Hi Carol,

I think Jane Connan is the Jane Cameron who was with Isabella in 1871.

Have you tried looking at the children's birth/christening OPRs to see who were the godparents?
