Do you know where and when he was married?

It helps to narrow down the scope somewhat, where did you get the information on his probable birth date
and his spouse?

Being born in 1816 would give a high chance of his living beyond 1855 - if so his parents would /should be named on his death certificate.

There is one marriage on the IGI to a couple of those names
NOV 1842 New Monkland, Lanark, Scotland .

There is a possible death of his wife on scotlandspeople - you can search there using both her surnames - could be worth a look.
Or try and find them together on a census- and get a birthplace that way.

Did the Janet Dunn/Smith 1858 death on Scotlandspeople not match?

As they didn't marry until 1842, the 1851 census is the first place to look for them together.

SP shows there are a couple of those names and approx ages in Lanarkshire in 1851

Do you know of any children? if so looking for thier births will help narrow down the census possibilities.

If you haven't looked at the SP results I'd urge you to do so, as the original documents there have a lot of information.

He is living at Coatbridge on census records.

There is a death indexed in 1890 at Coatbridge of an Andrew Smith born 1815.

That makes more sense now.

The only census I couldn't find him on was 1841 but now that I know he was married before I see him with his first wife and daughter Marion at Airdrie in 1841.
