Hi plumbcraft6,

[TS_welcome]

The Scotlands People site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ It is a pay per view site, but is recognised as the best one for Scottish family research.

It has a marriage for William and Marianne in 1903.

1903 SMITH WILLIAM CANDLISH MARIANNE WYLLIE PARTICK GLASGOW/LANARK 646/03 0078

If you have a look at the image, it will tell you their ages (watch out for a few wee white lies though) and their parents' names. As the marriage was in 1903, you should also be able to find the 1901 and previous census records listing siblings. Hopefully, this should be able to set you off on finding your rellies.

Couldn't resist a peek at the marriage image, so here's a wee bit of a heads up to get you going.

At the time of the marriage, Marianne was a Stewardess and William was a Steward on ships. Marianne's parents were Hugh Candlish (deceased) and Marianne Candlish maiden name Wyllie.

In the 1901 census Marianne (calling herself Mary) is listed...

Name: Mary Candlish
Age: 27
Estimated birth year: abt 1874
Relationship: Stewardess
Gender: Female
Where born: Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Registration Number: 644/7
Registration district: Blythswood
Civil parish: Vessels
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Custom House
Occupation: Stewardess

Her mother (transcribed in Ancestry as Mary Ann) and what appears to be two of Marianne's sisters are still living at her address from her marriage.

Name: Mary Ann Candlish
Age: 53
Estimated birth year: abt 1848
Relationship: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Registration Number: 646/4
Registration district: Partick
Civil parish: Govan
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 7 Havelock St
Occupation: Dressmaker
ED: 21
Household schedule number: 38
Line: 16
Roll: CSSCT1901_334
Household Members: Name Age
Mary Ann Candlish 53
Hughina Candlish 21 (Named for her father?)
Marion Candlish 19

Hope that helps.

Hi plumbcraft6

The problem here is always going to be the surname SMITH.

The situation in terms of finding William SMITH in the 1901 and earlier censuses is also his occupation, Ship Steward (Chief), i.e he may not have been in Scotland for the 1901 census. OK, he should still appear in the Merchant Nvay section of the 1901 census, but that's unlikely to provide relevant family info.

The Scottish 1903 marriage record gives the names of both parents of the groom and bride.

From that, it's easy to find the 1911 death of his father William Gray SMITH, variously a Master Baker or Restauranteur, for which Son, William SMITH was the informant.

William Gray SMITH, 22 year old baker, married Mary Brown HOOD in Glasgow, in 1865.

Using Ancestry rather than ScotlandsPeople in the first instance may lead you to relevant census records in 1891 and earlier, since the Ancestry Scottish census databases can also be searched on occupation ! Then go back to SP for the image.

But, like I said, the problem here is always going to be SMITH. !

A day's research in Edinburgh could well solve the problem, since a good number of ScotlandsPeople credits could be necessary to solve this situation on the www at SP.

I can find the very likely 1871 census for William, baker, and Mary, with kiddiewinkies Robert C, aged 5, William H, 1, and Mary, 3.

Exceedingly likely since there are 2 HOOD brothers-in-law in the Household, plus a GRAY visitor.

But nothing readily obvious in 1881, 1891 or 1901 ............. even using Ancestry, and the occupation of Baker.

Incidentally, there isn't a Scottish 1907 birth record for a William John Candlish SMITH, not even for a couple of years either way.

In 1914 young William would have been just 7, or thereabouts, so that it's most likely that it was his family who emigrated, not young William on his own.

The FindMyPast pay-per-view website has the UK outgoing passenger lists, but, again, the problem could be that surname SMITH.

Be aware, as well, that many emigrants who went to NZ did so via Australia, i.e. the destination of their ship from the UK may have been Oz.

The Smith family are at Helensburgh in 1881from Ancestry -

William Smith 37 Baker, born Milngavie
Mary Smith 36 born East Kilbride
Robt Smith 15
Mary Smith 12
Sarah G Smith 7
William Smith 5 born Helensburgh
Agnes Smith 3

A likely Mary Hood is living at Tradeston in 1861.

Going by his children's names I think it's highly likely that this is William senior in 1851 at Milngavie-

Sarah Gray 47 Contractor's wife, born Sanquhar, Dumfries
Alexander Crawford 13 son
James Craoford 15 son
William Smith 7 son born Milngavie
Donald Donald 20
Hugh Sinder 20

Annette

Hi Plumbcraft6,

His 1907 birth is there to be found on ScotlandsPeople. If you search for:

surname: smith
given names: william j* c*
year from: 1904
year to: 1910

you will find the search produces 6 results. One of the two 1907 results fits best to William James Candlish Smith - and it is him.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks for putting me out of my misery Andrew. :D
Regards,
Annette

PS Looks like his dad could be the chief cook aboard a ship berthed at Dumbarton in 1901.
