Hello Maggie,
What was the wife’s full name and exact date of death? Unfortunately there’s no Edinburgh Newspaper in the 19C British Library newspapers database after about 1865. There’s only the Scotsman at its Pay Site
http://archive.scotsman.com/
Maybe something appeared in the Glasgow, Dundee, or Aberdeen newspapers, but distance probably decreases the likelihood.

If he's the one married to Agnes he's still alive in 1861 at Newington -
Robert Duncan 45 shoemaker
Agnes Duncan 42
Robert Duncan 9

Hi Maggie:
Have you looked at Robert Duncan who died 1861-1862 born 1817 +/_ 5, without entering a location ?
Is it possible that he was born earlier? If your source for his birth is a baptismal record, he could possibly have been baptised years after his birth because the family hadn't belonged to a church, or were too far away for him to be baptised soon after birth.
It's not unheard of, for people to 'adjust' their age, and then there's also the possibility that he 'guess-timated' his age.
