Walter Grieve - Inveraray/Killin and Dunkeld

Post by grievsey » Thu Aug 05, 2010 5:29 pm

Hello,

I am researching my family tree and on my fathers side I have got as far back as my Fourth Great Granfather Walter Grieve (Occupation - Shepperd) who was married in 1797 in the Parish of Inveraray & Glenaray to my Fourth Great Grandmother Elisabeth Wier who originally hailed from the Parish of St Vigeans in Angus and was born in 1776.

They had children called James, Janet, Walter, William and Hugh who were all born between 1797 & 1824.

However, I am having trouble getting any further back from my Fourth Great Grandfather Walter to his parents etc... and wondered if anyone had any other information that could help me. I am using Scotlands People which has proved useful but I am now at a dead end. They were a farming family who did move about a bit as the children were bron in Inveraray, Killin and Dunkeld which were and still are big farming areas.

My own surname even translates as a "Land Manager" or "Ghillie".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards and thanks

Hello Grant, and welcome to TalkingScot.

I’m not much of an expert on 18th century research but I have noticed that most people tend to come to a grinding halt around the time period where you are having difficulties.

It’s always a good idea to check the state of the records in the parish or parishes in which you are interested just to make sure that you are not chasing something that is known not to exist.

ScotlandsPeople lists http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/re ... -oprs.html

Turnbull’s 1849 survey http://books.google.com.au/books?id=aCE ... &q&f=false

You have birth details for Elisabeth Wier, do you know her parents names? If Walter and Elisabeth were sticking to traditional naming patterns the first son would be named after the father’s father, second after mother’s father, first daughter after mother’s mother and second daughter after father’s mother.

What were the dates of birth of the children? Are the earliest of them close enough together and to the marriage date as to inspire confidence that there are no other early children whose records are missing. If so, do the names give a clue as to whether traditional patterns were followed and suggest what Walters father’s name may have been?

Hope that makes sense,
Alan

Alan,

Thanks for the welcome and the advice.

I will certainly look into these areas and see what comes up. I have managed to find over 216 members of my family without too much effort mainly because they congregated around Glasgow for work etc...I live in Ireland and will be coming over later in the year to do some more work around Argyll & Perthshire on this so we will see what comes up.

Thanks again.
