Anyone to help me
As I have reached a brick wall in my family tree – mainly due to the lack of information on OPRs, I have decided to try and find out what happened to some of the family when they left their hometown of Dunfermline and before that Inverkeithing in Fife.
I have focused on George Beveridge and his wife Margaret Drummond. They were married 5th March 1826 in Dunfermline. They appear on the 1841 census in New Row Dunfermline with 6 of their children . They turn up in 1851 with another 2 children living at 4 Trafalgar St Calton By the 1861 census it is only George and 2nd wife Jane who are at the same address 4 Trafalgar St Calton.
I know that Margaret died in 1858 in Bridgeton, Glasgow and George remarried Jane McMurtrie in 1859 in Hutchesontown in Glasgow. He also remarried again this time to Martha Mercer in Calton Glasgow in 1864. He died in 1866 from a heart attack while in a spirit shop in Calton Glasgow.
As for the children, I have been working my way through them but the girls are proving difficult ! anyway here is what I have –
James, as you can see below is living next door to his father at no 6 Trafalgar St. I have not been able to find him in 1871 but have found his wife Catherine Duncan in the 1871 census living at 48 Rumford St Glasgow with 4 children it says married not widowed so I maybe can assume James is still alive. He is eluding me as I cannot find a death for him. Also at the same address is his brother Thomas with his wife Jane Mitchell and their 3 children. I know Thomas was drowned at sea in 1883.
I think George died in 1843 – I have a death cert for a 9 year old George Beverage died of croup Gorbals. As it’s an OPR there is very little info. He doesn’t appear on any census after 1841. This could also pinpoint when they moved to Glasgow .
David died in 1856 in Bridgeton age 16 of Gastric ? I think it is flu. This is a stat record so it is verified by the parents names.
John - I cannot find any death or marriage in Glasgow.
Margaret again difficult – no death under Beveridge so probably married. I have found 2 marriages one to Donald McDonald in 1851– this is not her as I checked the cert OPR again so no info then I checked her death cert and the parents are not the same. The other one is to Fergus Ferguson m.1853 in Barony Glasgow – I can’t find a death cert for her yet.
Elizabeth I was lucky I happened to see an Elizabeth Beveridge married to John Watson who was a lodger in the 1861 census. She lived at 48 Rumford St and had 1 child. She died in 1866 of TB.
Euphemia, who was also known as Elspeth has also been very difficult to find .
Sorry for such a long posting but I thought if anyone was up for a challenge - they are most welcome to help! Sometimes fresh eyes can see something I have missed.

Re: Anyone to help me
Hi Ailsa
I had a browse for daughter Margaret with little success
There are 2 children on the IGI born to Fergus Ferguson and Margaret Beveridge - being Jane Millan Ferguson 1858 and Fergus 1860 both born Bridgeton.
I can't easily find any of them in any census. There is a Fergus Ferguson died in Bridgeton in 1860 - no age given - could be the child.
I then checked some immigration records but had no joy there either.

Re: Anyone to help me
Hi Trish,
Thanks for helping - it's good to see we are both going down the same route. The females are much harder as they usually marry - usually i just come across a marriage by chance but not in the case of Margaret and Euphemia/Elspeth.
I am surprised not to find a death for James as his wife and 2 daughters appear on the 1881 census in 48 Rumford St Barony Glasgow -
Catherine Head widowed 57 housekeeper
Catherine daughter unmarried 16 PL weaver
Lizzie daughter unmarried 19 PL weaver
I also checked either page of this census to see if anyone else might have been living there but no one i could recognise.
James may have died in another country or at sea. His brother Thomas (my gg grandfather) was by then living in Falkirk and was working on a coal ship which sunk in 1883. Maybe James was also working on the ships and that is why he is missing from the 1871 census. Thomas's family emigrated en masse to Boston shortly after he drowned.
John Beveridge brother of James is also a mystery with no death cert in Scotland - maybe he emigrated and the rest followed?
Anyway better get some housework done! Thanks again,
Ailsa

Re: Anyone to help me
I have found from my Australian Immigrants that Family did tend to follow family - so it could well be that many more of the family went to Boston. I didn't look for all of the family so will browse some more.
Many of my families came from this part of Fife and I did some research for a friend who had a small connection to a Beveridge family (Janet (c. 1827 Dunfermline) married John Strang in 1846, so the names all sound familar - sorry I haven't been very successful in the searching.

Re: Anyone to help me
Ailsa,
This may be a red herring or an incredible piece of pure luck but I was sent a newspaper cutting from one of my Austarlian contacts about a death of one of my Dobbies and there's a John Beveridge listed.
If you pm me your email I'll send it to you.
Best wishes,
Meg

Re: Anyone to help me
Meg has kindly forwarded me a newspaper clipping she has of her own relatives but further down the page has the following in the Deaths section.
The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW 1843-1893)
BEVERIDGE-At his son's residence Caledonia Hotel West Maitland on May 31 1893, John Beveridge of Stockton age 58 years, native of Dunfermline, Scotland.
Could be a strong possibility and i will definitely try and follow it up. Very strange Meg seeing it on her newspaper clipping.
I will try and find out more!

Hello Ailsa,
More about the fellow Meg found.
Here’s the death index entry. It looks like the informant didn’t know the parent’s names.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index ... ent=births.
8832/1893 BEVERIDGE JOHN, UNKNOWN, UNKNOWN, WEST MAITLAND
There’s more about him in the Maitland Mercury. Deceased was age 58, native of Dunfermline, came to NSW about 30 years before. Lived mainly in Newcastle and was first Mayor of Stockton. His wife and son James are only surviving members of the family. Funeral in Church of England, buried at Stockton. http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/se ... =titleid:8
There’s no sign of a Beveridge headstone at Stockton Cemetery
http://austcemindex.com/cemetery-inscri ... php?id=201
This looks like his arrival in NSW in 1858 on the Forest Monarch. (Departed Southampton on 25 August 1858)
http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/l ... 7.jpg&No=1
Families listed from image page 1.
John Beveridge, age 24, labourer, native of Dunfermline, Presbyterian etc.
Ann Beveridge, age 22, native of Dunfermline, Presbyterian etc.
Jane Beveridge, infant, died on voyage.
Another Beveridge on board in Single males from page 9.
James Beveridge, age 24, miner, native place Fifeshire, Presbyterian etc.
Probable death of the wife from NSW BDM, fathers name Angus.
9642/1906 BEVERIDGE ANN, ANGUS, , NEWCASTLE
The only child born NSW.
10447/1861 BEVERIDGE JAMES, JOHN, ANN, NEWCASTLE
All the best,
Alan

Re: Anyone to help me
Alan,
Great work! i wouldn't know where to start looking for Australian records. Part of me feels he is not the John Beveridge i am looking for. However, stranger things have happened.
It always mentions that he was a native of Dunfermline - which is true, but his family moved to Glasgow between 1841 and 1851. John was born 14/4/1837. He appears on the 1851 census age 15. Although he may still have considered himself a Fifer throughout his life.
His wife Ann and child Jane were also born in Dunfermline - so this is a good place to start. On the LDS I found a child Jean Beveridge b.27/10/1857 in Dunfermline parents John Beveridge and Ann Falconer. Marriage of John and Ann in Dunfermline 12/1/1857. Finally birth of Ann Falconer 30/1/1836 parents Angus Falconer mother Jean Christie.
The marriage and birth dates tie in with the voyage and the father's name Angus on Ann's death details.
There is the chance that John may have returned to Dunfermline after 1851 and met and married Ann then emigrated to Australia.
It made for good reading and well found Alan, Thanks again.
