I have come across a birth certificate which has the above letters written after the mother's maiden name. Anyone any idea what they mean ?

Hi Frances
Date of the event? Registration district? Names of persons ; child, mother, father (as long as this is not after our cut off date of 1909)? Without a few clues to put the item in context we are unlikley to be able to shed much light on this, I think....
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Frances,
I've had a look at the birth certificate. The other letter 'S's on that page are similar - very little top half, and the bottom half forming a closed loop. So I would go for Newark N J U S A.
All the best,
AndrewP

Nice one, Lesley! =D>
In 1906 there is a passenger record for Thomas "Greenless" who says his last permanent residence was Newark, with Paisley written underneath. He says he is going to his Father in law Mr. Cummings at 21 Mount Prospect av, Newark.
So that is why they married there (assuming that was the marriage location that was meant?)

Hi Frances,
On the birth certificate, the place of birth is given as Newark, Castlehead, Paisley. Presumably they named their house after the place they were married (in NJ, USA) a year earlier.
All the best,
Andrew
