John Adam/Ann Shand Aberdeenshire family
I am wondering if anyone has done research on this couple or may have info they can give me. John Adam born Aberdeenshire born abt 1761 and Ann Shand born 1779 Gartly, Huntly, Aberdeenshire. Married 11 Feb 1795 in Drumblade Aberdeenshire. Particularly looking for parents of both John and Ann. Appreciate any help.

Re: John Adam/Ann Shand Aberdeenshire family
Hello Beverley,
This person has been researching them, but he’s from Australia as well, so perhaps it’s old news to you. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin ... 0&id=I2828
I guess they probably died before 1855 and you don’t have statutory death certificates with parent’s names. Gartly Parochial registers were “kept with tolerable regularity”. The parish of Gartly seems to have been partly in Banff and partly in Aberdeen. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=wUu ... 22&f=false
The IGI has this record and some siblings. Is she a possibility?
ANN SHAND
Christening: 04 JAN 1773 Gartly, Aberdeen, Scotland
Father: JAMES SHAND
Mother: BARBRA ADAM
Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record.

Re: John Adam/Ann Shand Aberdeenshire family
Thank you very much Alan. Yes I think that is definitely the one I'm looking for.
Thanks too for the link - I had no idea anyone else was researching the same ones so I'll try to make contact with them.
Much appreciated.

Re: John Adam/Ann Shand Aberdeenshire family
Hi Beverley
If I do not have any other clues to my older records, I have often tried using naming patterns - especially if later branches of the family used same - they can give some clues - of course no guarantee. I checked the IGI for children to your Ann and John and found the following extracted baptisms - do please correct me if I have them wrong.
Ann 1795
Alexander 1797
William 1799
Jean 1801
John 1803
all baptised Drumblade Aberdeen Scotland
Naming patterns from these children would give John's parents as Alexander and Jean and Ann's parents as William and Ann (and naming the 3rd son after his father does follow the naming patterns).
I found the following possibilities for these on the IGI - using your time frames
Ann Shand baptised 2 Mar 1779 Mortlach Banff Scotland parents William Shand and Ann Thompson - Alan mentioned Banff so I thought this may not be too far away
Closest find for John was this one: John Adam baptised 28 mar 1760 Drumblade Aberdeen Father Alexr Adam - unfortunately some early parish records only give the name of the father on baptisms. Looking for a marriage there was an Alexr Adam married a Janet Bruice 1754 in Drumblade - possible, although I would have prefered to find Jean or Jane.

Thanks so much Trish - that's very helpful.
Alan - the email addie given for the ancestry person researching John Adam came back to me so he's obviously doesn't use the same one any longer. Shame.

Re: John Adam/Ann Shand Aberdeenshire family
I don't know how this helps as it still doesn't prove anything but I'll post my thoughts anyway.
This looks like John in 1841 (I assume you have this as you know rough dob)
Piece: SCT1841/188 Place: Drumblade -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Drumblade Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 3 Page: 8
Address: Newbigging
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
ADAM John M 80 Farmer Aberdeenshire
ADAM Ann F 60 Aberdeenshire
ADAM Robert M 25 Aberdeenshire
BUIE Jane F 15 Female Servant Aberdeenshire
BROWSTER George M 10 Ag. Labourer Aberdeenshire
Here is John's neighbour in 1841 from also from FREECEN-

ADAM George M 45 Farmer Aberdeenshire
ADAM George M 10 Aberdeenshire
ROBERTSON Isabella F 40 Female Servant Outside Census County (1841)
HENRY Isabella F 15 Female Servant Aberdeenshire
The 1851 shows George was born at Gartly and there is this birth -
GEORGE ADAM
05 FEB 1793 Gartly, Aberdeen, Scotland
Parents:
Father: ALEXANDER ADAM Family
Mother: ELSPET COBAN
I wonder if this is John's nephew and Alexander his brother?
There is an Alexander born just over a year after the marriage of Alexander and Janet Bruce -
ALEXR. ADAM
12 MAR 1756 Drumblade, Aberdeen, Scotland
Parents:
Father: ALEXR. ADAM
I too thought it likely that the birth Trish saw in 1860 was the right one and wondered if Alexander was an older brother.
Could be costly and take you nowhere but I wonder if George's birth entry is worth at look for any hints.
Hope all this makes sense.
Regards,
Annette

Re: John Adam/Ann Shand Aberdeenshire family
thanks Annette for going to that trouble for me. I had seen that census entry and wondered if it was perhaps a connection. There were Adams and Grants all around the Newbigging area so it's likely. I did have a look at the familysearch site which Jean suggested and was able to piece quite a bit together from there. I wondered if the Alexr. Adam and Jean Bruice marriage might be the right one but it's hard to get proof. I guess sometimes you just have to go by feel of the names running through families etc.
Anyway I'm grateful for your help Annette. Thanks so much.

Thank you Alan. I note on that webpage Peter's email addie is the same as the one that bounced back. On his list of rellies neither John Adam nor Ann Shand appear. Intriguing. There is a postal address which I may write to. Appreciate your help thanks.
