Hi
I am looking for the deaths of Elizabeth Muir [McCultchie]after 1875 and her husband before 1875. Their son Murdoch died that year and his father was dead but his mother was still living.
Murdoch was born Kilmarnock but died in Glasgow and I don't know if the parents still lived there or were born there. Any help would be great.

A search on ScotlandsPeople gives these which are close to your request.
Elizabeth Muir / McCutcheon 1872, age 101, Wigtownshire, Mochrum
Elizabeth Muir / McCutcheon 1900, age 65, Ayrshire, Maybole
Elizabeth Muir / McCutcheon 1931, age 79, Kirkcudbrightshire, Anwoth
You have ruled out the first one by looking after 1875, so take your pick of the last two as good possibilities for your Elizabeth.
As son Murdoch was given as age 50 when he died in 1875 that gives an estimated birth year of 1825. So you need to find them on censuses to cut down on the 296 William Muirs who died between 1855 and 1875. If William died pre-1855, then there is a bigger problem - no civil death certificate, no help from the IGI, no OPR death index on SP.
That gives another problem concerning Elizabeth. Son Murdoch was born about 1825, she was much older than the last two Elizabeths above. The 1872 death Elizabeth is a possibility, but only if the age of 101 is a significant over-estimate. More likely then she was none of the three above. You will need to think what other possible names McCultchie could be written as.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Re: William and Elizabeth Muir
Hello Heather,
Murdoch married in 1856 and his parents were recorded as alive then (or at least not recorded as dead). Elizabeth's maiden name looks like McLatchie on that register entry. William is, very appropriately, a riddle maker.
I have searched for both deaths with no luck so far, but I shall return to the task later. Don't let that stop anyone else trying though!
Regards,
John

Re: William and Elizabeth Muir
Hello Heather,
you will find both of them (as Muir) on the 1871 census, living in Ayr. William, indexed as Mair, died there in 1873, with son Robert as informant. Elizabeth, indexed as Catherine Mair, also died there in 1877, again with son Robert as informant.
Please submit a contact form to SP asking for Catherine to be changed to Elizabeth. When the User Group minutes come out, you will see that corrections continue to be an issue with SP (GROS correct them quickly), and I would like to see how long this takes to correct if it does not come from me.

John
