Help with tuton ancestors

Post by harden » Sat Feb 05, 2011 3:55 pm

Searching for marriage of James Tuton (Tuten) and Jane Smith, perhaps around 1820's. Could have been living in Hamilton (James was a Flesher). [-o<

Hi Mae

Can you give us little more background information please? This will help us to help you. For instance, where did you find the names of this couple? Why do you believe they may be in the Hamilton area?

I'm seeing a James on Freecen in the 1851 - is this a known son?
TUTEN James, unmarried, age 16, Farm Servant, born Lanarkshire - Hamilton

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Mae,

The nearest that I can see at first glance in Lanarkshire is James Tutton married Jane Brown in Hamilton in 1835. If that looks useful to you, you can download the OPR page from ScotlandsPeople.

All the best,

Hi, the info comes from the marriage certificate of their son, James Tuten and Janet Fulton, 31.7.1855 in Glasgow Calton district. I've been unable to trace his parents any further back than this. Thanks for your help, still hoping for any relevant info.

Hi Mae,

A few more clues: James Tuton and Jane Fulton produced two children called Jane Smith Tuton, both of whom died as young children. Jane (ms Fulton) Tuton died as widow of (1) James Tuton and (2) James Wilson. James's death certificate lists him as the illegitimate son of Jane Smith. The first Jane Smith Tuton was registered in 1855, so that birth certificate has the extra information only to be found on an 1855 certificate.

The one I gave in the post above, whether related or not I am unsure, Jane Tuton (ms Brown) died as widow of James Tuton (butcher). That James Tuton is given as formerly flesher on his death certificate. Could he be a cousin of 'your' James Tuton?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Mae,
I'm wondering where you got the information about the marriage date and Jane's surname. Are these your family in 1841 and 1861?

1841
Castle Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire
James Sutton, 30, born Lanarkshire, Flesher
Jane Sutton, 25, born Lanarkshire
James Sutton, 1, born Lanarkshire

1861
Gicks Square, St Quivox, Ayr
James Tuton, 54, Head, born Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Flesher
Jane Tuton, 50, Wife, born Hamilton, Lanarkshire
James Tuton, 20, Son, born Hamilton, Lanarkshire
Robert Tuton, 17, Son, born Hamilton, Lanarkshire
William Tuton, 12, born Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scholar

If so, that would seem to indicate a marriage quite a bit later than you suggested-- unless you know of a number of children born before James Jr in 1840.

In addition, on the FamilySearch.org site, there is this marriage:

Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910

groom's name: James Tutton
bride's name: Jane Brown
marriage date: 15 Nov 1835
marriage place: Hamilton,Lanark,Scotland
indexing project (batch) number: M11647-6
system origin: Scotland-ODM
source film number: 1066594

Could your Jane be Jane Brown, rather than Jane Smith?

All the best,
Sarah

P.S. I see that Lesley and Andrew have been busy while I was rooting around in the censuses :D

I see that everybody has been busy while I've been searching the census records!!! By the way Sarah they are indexed as Lutton in 1851.

I basically came up with the same questions. :D

So what age was James when he married Jane Fulton and what was his address?

Annette

Later.......................I found him on the census records and see that his age matches the James that Lesley found in 1851. So it looks like he was the illegitimate son of James the butcher living at Ayr and a Jane Smith.

Hi everyone - Gosh, I've now got lots of homework to puzzle over! Thanks for all the info, at first glance not too sure of any of them, but certainly appreciate all your input. The Ayrshire connection might be important, as my James who married in 1855 (aged 22) eventually ended up in Galston, Ayrshire where my gggrandmother was born. Will let you know if I can resolve my mystery. [cheers]
