I've got a situation that has appeared twice and am wondering if anyone else has come across the same ?
Death Registration of both husband and wife list the mother as the same name. Could be a coinciendence but now I've got two married couples like this and it seems a little odd.
Comments much appreciated ...

Who was the informant in both cases?
It sounds to me very much like the same person, and the related stress leading to an error in the info provided to the registrar. Such confusion, especially if the informant is not a sibling or the spouse is quite common.
Altho' if the names involved are very commonly occuring, then it's not an impossible coincidence.
What do other related records, - statutory and census, - provide as info that could help to clarify the situation?

IGI has no marriages or births to John Murdoch and Jane Selkirk but there are six extracted births for James McMillan and Jane Selkirk:
1. MARY MCMILLAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 MAY 1828 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland
2. JEAN MCMILLAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 JAN 1824 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland
3. ELIZABETH MCMILLAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 03 APR 1831 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland
4. MARGARET MCMILLAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 22 AUG 1819 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland
5. AGNES MCMILLAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 JAN 1835 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland
6. JANET MCMILLAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 MAY 1828 Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland
Earlier censuses should give an indication of John Murdoch's age and since John and Jane were married in 1848 there is a good chance of finding John in the 1841 census with both parents (probably around the Gorbals).
Do you know if John had any siblings? Tracking down their marriages or deaths may provide more accurate parentage.

Hi Heather,
I know you'll know of the marriages & births.
Sorry no more on the censuses - the original pages should provide more details (now added).
but the names don't exactly fit what Andy has found.
Difficult to find the right John MURDOCH abt 15-20yrs in Glasgow 1841 without parents' names, and any possible siblings.

Jack, Andy, David,
Gee you guys !! "Thank you" This certainly seems to confirm the McMillan end of things. I have already done a IGI search for a John Murdoch born in Gorbals c1826 and have one possible candidate born on the 03Jul1825, parents are James Murdoch and Margaret Nesbit. There are two others born in Gorbals as well a year or two later. So, given the suggestion to try to track down any siblings (via the same parents listed) and hopefully the census I should be able to track down John' mum and dad. Thanks again !

Hi Heather,
I've added the census details to the previous post.
They were ALL as born in the County in 1841, but this doesn't match what's said in 1851.
The 1841 index has mother Jane as SELKING, but the page entry could quite easily be SELCRAG,
which is very similar to mother's name on James MURDOCH's 1850 birth!!
And the surname McMILLAN may have been McMILLEN (with an 'E') in 1841; difficult to be certain.
Jack

ps - like Davie, curious to know! - who were the various informants on the DCs?

Thank you very much again for your ideas and assistance. One thing does appear to be obvious - Jane (Jean) McMillan's mum and dad were likely James McMillan and Jane(Jean) Selkirk (or var. Selking - Selcraig).
John is a puzzle.
Informant information listed on the death registration :
John Murdoch : d. 08 Sep 1868, 54 East Hamilton St., Greenock
Parents : John Murdoch - Jane Selkirk
Informant : John Bickford, Storekeeper, 34 East Hamilton St., Greenock
(odd that his wife did not report his death ??)
Jane McMillan d. 19Aug 1884, 4 Cartsburn St., Greenock
Parents : James McMillan - Jane Selkirk
Informant : Archibald Murdoch, Son
I think the best approach for John Murdoch is to try to find any by the same name - general time period - and possible siblings by the same parents and see if I can find a death certificate + parents ..
Best Regards to all,
Heatherv
