Why did May Little return?

Post by littlealison » Wed May 11, 2011 8:18 am

Hello folks, me again.
Having got in touch with Canadian relatives, I have a load of info there. And the recent free Canadian records on Ancestry have provided some puzzles.
Ritchie Little, who left Glasgow in 1926, had various family who left before him. May, his daughter, left in 1924, aged about 19.
And returned to Glasgow in July 1925 - to go back to Canada in November of that year.............. In April 1926 she married.

The second cousin who I've been corresponding with is considerably puzzled by this, says 'it must have been very expensive - and is it possible she was pregnant?'
There may of course have been many other reasons, but I'd like to rule this one out if possible!
Is it possible to find if one May Little had a child in Glasgow in 1925? I haven't access to anything online that can tell me - can any kind person have a look for me?
She may, I suppose, have gone to try and persuade her father to join them in Canada, he was 62 by then, but he didn't get there for the marriage.
Thanks for everything so far - Alison

Hi Alison,
There is an entry on http://www.findmypast.co.uk/home.jsp that looks like her.
It would tell you her occupation.
Could she have been a maid ?

Hello there.
Afraid I am not on fmp any more. Yes I have been told that May did live-in hotel work.
But the two records I have are:
Montreal to Glasgow, July 1925 (with the correct address, definite)
Glasgow to Montreal, November 1925 - since she was back in April to marry, this seems right.
I don't think she would have gone from Liverpool.
Still trying ! thanks anyway - Alison

Hello all,
Although she claimed no profession when she went back to Glasgow in July, on her return in November 1925 she was a librarian and paid for her passage herself. She married a theological student in the following April in Montreal. I would tend to think that she went back either because her father was ill, or for some other family reason. Perhaps she was just getting things together for her marriage and for her father's eventual move. I don't think the passage was that overwhelmingly expensive at the time-- at least, people seemed to go back and forth fairly regularly.

But, if you want to be sure she didn't have a child... There are 23 children surnamed Little born in Glasgow City in 1925. Since you can't download the certs of such recent births and the index won't tell you the parents' names, I don't see any way to find out (without ordering all the certs!) except to go in person to Edinburgh or Glasgow and look at each of the records.

Unless, of course, she went back to Ireland (I see she was born in Dublin according to the ship manifest) to have her child :?

Regards,
Sarah

Sarah, sorry about the delay.
Thanks for the extra bits here. I think this is about as far as I can go on this. It was a bit of a long shot anyway. It seems most likely that the trip was something to do with her father.
I have passed the link here to Margaret in Canada, but have not had an answer. Maybe she will decide to find out somehow. I will also try asking a contact in Scotland if he is thinking of going to look at records, you never know. Thanks again - Alison.
