Any Information on Edward and Catherine Finnigan Currie

Post by cepull » Mon Jul 11, 2011 7:41 pm

Hello everyone ... I'm new to the site and was trying to find any information about my wifes 3rd great grandparents, Edward (b:1816) and Catherine (b:1817) Finnigan Currie or their son Edward (b:1842) and Bridget (b:1846) O'Neil Currie. I believe they were all born in Ireland but appear to have lived in Scotland for quite some time. I have marriage information for Edward and Bridget from 1863 and 1871 census for them but I don't have anything else for them. I also have 1861 census information for Edward and Catherine. I am trying to gather information here in the US (Pennsylvania) but this seemed to be a very informative site so I'm giving it a try. Any information is greatly welcome and appreciated.

Welcome to TS.

You don't mention were you found them living in the census records you have or any occupations listed - that can help us narrow things down.
I did a parent search [on the IGI at Familysearch.org] for children of Edward Currie and Bridget O'neil:
there were 6 -
1. PETER CURRIE - 17 DEC 1869 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. JAMES CURRIE - 15 SEP 1866 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. EDWARD CURRIE - 10 MAY 1864 Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland
4. JOHN CURRIE - 04 OCT 1867 Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland
5. EDWARD CURRIE - 15 SEP 1866 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
6. PATRICK CURRIE - 14 JUL 1865 Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland

plus a marriage of the pair 18 JUL 1863 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
looking at the original record on Scotlands People will give a lot more information [address, parents and ages]

I had a quick look at Freecen [http://freecen.rootsweb.com] - but nothing obvious cropped up, but the coverage there isn't complete yet.

Happy hunting
Wilma

Hi cepull and welcome to Talking Scot! (Can't get the welcome smiley to work!) [TS_welcome]

I found a tree on Ancestry.com for your Edward and Catherine--the Gronert Family Tree. Is that yours? If not, there is also a daughter Mary born in 1845 who marries James Rooney and had quite a large family, but there isn't much information on Edward and Catherine's son Edward.

Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Thanks for the reply and warm welcome, Carol. I came accross the Gronert tree on ancestry just a few days ago. It gave me a lot of information on Mary. I have a good bit of info on Edward and Bridget but just recently found the wedding information that named Edward and Catherine so began my search in Scotland. The Scotland People site has very good information only if you get the right ancestor, it was getting expensive pulling up information only to find out they weren't related. I was trying to find death records for Edward and Catherine but I'm not even sure they died in Scotland, although I don't believe they came to the US like their children.

Thanks Andrew!

Cepull,

I had a look around for Edward and Catherine's death certs too and didn't find them. Maybe they returned to Ireland? Do you know if there was still family back there?

Also, it looks like they had a daughter Ann who married John Kellin and is on the 1861 census with Edward and Catherine. I couldn't find death certs for her or her husband either. Did they immigrate also?

Good hunting!

Familysearch.org has marriage lic for Ann Currie and John "Keeling" (7 Feb 1857, New Monkland, Lanarkshire) but children Ellen (1859) and John (1864) last name listed as "Keelan". I couldn't read the name on 1861 census, you have it as "Kellin" so I'm not sure the correct spelling. I have 1900 US census for Edward and Bridget Currie who came to Pennsylvania, since Ann and Mary have married names, I haven't found them yet.

:D Thank You for the reply! Edward and Bridget ended up in Pennsylvania and had several more children from 1872 to 1889 (for a total of 13 that I have listed in my tree). Their 8th born, James Thomas Currie (b:1877) was my wife's great-grandfather. There name is spelled "Curry" on the 1900 US census. Edward's sister, Mary, married James Rooney in Scotland in 1865 and his other sister, Ann, married John "Keeling" or "Keelan" or "Kellin" in 1857 according to Scotland 1861 census. I have no record of death for any of the three children of Edward and Catherine Currie (nor any record of their death).

Hi again,

I went back and had another look at the original 1861 census and it appears that Ann's married name is either Keelan or Keelain.

Wondering if this could be them on the 1880 US census in Philidelphia:

1880 United States Federal Census 1880 United States Federal Census

Hi again,

The reason you may be having trouble finding certificates for this family is because the original family name of Edward Sr. was McGorry and changed to Currie.

Mary Currie Rooney's death cert is under Mary Rooney, 1914 Dalziel, Lanarkshire. She is the widow of James Rooney, parents were Edward McGorry and Catherine Finnigan. Edward Rooney son was the informant.

Can't resist a good mystery!

I went ahead and purchased the record for Marry Currie Rooney. That is the first time I have ever seen McGorry. It is also kind of fascinating that James Rooney's mother was Elizabeth Currie. I briefly went to the Ireland search site and was overwhelmed by the number of "Edward Currie" and "Catherine Finnigan" entries. It will take a small fortune in searches to get the right one if it is even listed there.
