Henry/Harry Davies - marriage but no birth or death
Hi everyone
I'm so glad I stumbled on this site recently. I've now joined up & hoping that someone can help me with Henry/Harry.
I have a copy of his marriage cert from 1/1/1901 when he married Agnes Wardrop Campbell in Bridgeton Glasgow. He was 21 years old then so was born about 1879/80. His parents were John Davies(deceased) & Elizabeth McWhinnie (formerly Davies) ms Chorley. I have tried all the usual sites and spellings as on son's birth cert it is Davis not Davies & he signed Harry not Henry. I can't find his birth, census or death & also no trace of his parents marriage, census or deaths either. His Mother obviously remarried a Mr ? McWhinnie but can't find that marriage either.
Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks in anticipation
Anne

Hi welcome to TS
No answers coming up - just more questions
What [other than his marriage] makes you think he was born or lived in Scotland?
I can't see any obvious candidates on the 1901 or 1911 census, which makes me think they could be elsewhere.
His son, where and when was he born? [though if it's after 1911 give few details]
Have you found a death for his wife/ Scotlands People has a death of an Agnes Dav*s ms Campbell sometime around 1942 have you checked that one?
happy hunting
little later: I widened the age range and there is a Henry Davis with an Agnes in Glasgow in 1901 [don't take ages as cast-iron...] worth a look as they were married that same year

Hi to both of you
His address on marriage is 316 Nuneaton Street Glasgow. His son Colin Campbell Davis was born on 21/11/1901 at 23 Green Street, Calton Glasgow. His wife Agnes died 3/6/1913 aged 31 in Anderson St Glasgow. He was still alive in 1926 when Colin married in Bishopbriggs, Cadder. Assuming that he was living in Glasgow for that period of time at least.
His occupation in 1901 was clogmaker, when his wife died he was a coal salesman (as was her father so assume they were working together) & in 1926, he was again a shoemaker journeyman.
I have searched on ancestry.co.uk for matches in England & Wales but have not found anything yet.
Thanks for looking
Cheers

Re: Henry/Harry Davies - marriage but no birth or death
Here he is at 316 Nuneaton St in 1901 - as I suspected he was born in England.
George Vallance 29
Margaret Vallance 28
William Vallance 9
Agnes Vallance 7
Robert Vallance 5
Mary Vallance 2
Harris Davies 21 Boarder, born England, Shoemaker
Mary Davies 19 Boarder, born Glasgow
There is a death indexed at SP of a Harris Davidson in 1966 roughly the right age at Lanarkshire.
Regards,
Annette

Thanks Annette
I'll have a look at that one but see that 1901 census was on 31st March & he married on 1st Jan so I wonder why his wife Agnes isn't there. also he signed his name as Henry not Harris. I'll investigate as well to see who Mary Davies is, might be his sister. If so, the family looks to have moved to Glasgow after he was born but before Mary. The mystery deepens!

Hi Anne,
Did Henry/Harry and Agnes have children other than Colin? There is a Hendry Davis age 32 on the 1911 Census with wife Agnes 29, Colin 9, Elizabeth 6, Hendry 4, and William 9 months. They are at Auchwain (?) Rd, Cadder, Bishopbriggs. All of the Henrys on this page of the census are spelled Hendry by the census taker it looks like. This Henry Sr. was born in England. Only catch--his occupation is given as iron founder, locomotive works.
Carol

Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

I did notice Mary but assumed she was Agnes. I see from Carol's post the age is right for Agnes. Maybe a look at the original might help.annemac51 wrote:Thanks Annette

Was Agnes's father called Colin?
Carol's 1911 find looks good too - I wouldn't worry too much the occupation as you know he did change occupations through the years.

Thanks Carol,
This looks like the correct family as all the generations since then were born & lived in Auchinairn/Bishopbriggs area. I'll go look at the SP website again now that I've got that info from you. I wish I wasn't going out tonight as I'm looking forward to some headway at last, thanks again.
Annette
Yes, Agnes's father was Colin Campbell & mother was Mary. Not sure of ms as writing is hard to decipher but it might be McAtear
Cheers
