Hi Phil
Have you tried a search at Scotlands People? Trying a search, there is a birth entry for a John McKendry at Kilsyth in 1878, so you should be able to find him no problem.
For a small fee to purchase some credits, you will be able to view a digital copy of the original birth entry.
Best wishes

Hi all,
Ancestry has a tree--The Burns Family Tree--showing John with mother Margaret who married George Burns in 1878. Looks like John had a different father maybe as all the following children had the name Burns, but he was a McKendry. Not much info on John except for the 1891 census, but there is quite a bit on Margaret.

Thanks Lesley and Carol.
Have seen the tree in Ancestry but are trying to work out what happened to John after he took on the name Burns and appears to leave Scotland maybe for England.

A search on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk swiftly leads to the 1878 illegitimate birth of John McKENDRY to mother Margaret McKENDRY. No father's name is given.Pepper9 wrote:Could anyone help please by looking up a birth or baptism for John McKendry son of Margaret McKendry who was born in 1878 Kilsyth Stirlingshire? Thank you mb.
I wondered about the church baptism just in case Margaret named the father. It's a long shot but sometimes it happens. Appreciate your time.

Re: John McKendry 1878 Kilsyth baptism
I am so glad that the word illegitimate has been removed from all birth records in my part of the world. I've always found it used as an excuse to intimidate - to visit the (so called) sins of the fathers (or mothers) onto the child - who had no say whatsoever in the proceedings. It appeared to be compulsory in my 19th century families for the bride to be pregnant, probably luck as much as anything else that the marriage ever happened.
Phil, do you know for certain that John used the name Burns - or was it simply written on census records (often to avoid the enumerator/locals from finding out the family history) when he was a child. I researched one family where a child born outside marriage c. 1848 - changed his own name & his children's names between 1881 and 1891 to his Mother's maiden name - after having used his father/stepfather's name for almost 50 years. Have you found him under either name 1901/1911?

Hi Trish
He changed his name between 1891 and 1901 census. All of this is new to the family who only knew him as John Burns.
Thank you for your interest.

Have got the birth record from Scotland's People - as you said no father. Would like to find out what happened to him after 1901.
