McFarlane again

Hi to all at TS,

Hope no one is snowed in or feeling too cold these days. Here near Reading there is an icy wind and frosty mornings but as yet no snow.
Recently i have been looking at my McFarlane's who disappeared after the 1861 census in Glasgow. To make it shorter i had the McFarlane family living in Partick Glasgow from 1841.
Dugald and Margaret (Christie) were both born in Perth along with the eldest child Isabel. All the other children below were born in Partick but i have been unable to find them in the OPR

The above were all born before 1855, however on the 1861 census there is a further child John who is 7 in 1861 this should make him born in 1854 and a slim chance he was registered in 1855!
I had no luck with the search for him in Partick and as i am now down to 4 credits i have found one in Govan (see below)

1 1856 MCFARLANE JOHN M GOVAN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 646/01 0362

Knowing what the census is like it just might be him. I would be grateful if anyone could have a look.

That record is on the IGI at FamilySearch.org (don't forget that these free index records typically go until the 1870s!)
He is the son of John Mcfarlane and Isabella Wishart.

Hi Ailsa,

This John McFarlane's parents are John McFarlane and Isabella Wishart, registered by the grandfather Andrew Wishart. So it looks like he isn't yours.

And as I typed you found it Sarah.....boy am I put of practice! I forgot to look there....and yes that is what I found when I looked at the certificate, lol

I have been looking on the FamilySearch site but i know that the name can be terribly altered on ancestry and the fact that the 646 is Partick i might have been lucky.

I am thinking of contacting Partick library to see if they can shed any light on why there is no birth records of

All of them are registered as born in Partick on the census of 1851 and 1861.

Hi Ailsa,

In parish terms, 646 was Govan. However, for Registration District purposes, GROS divided Govan into smaller districts, as follows:

1855-1869
646/1 :: Govan
646/2 :: Partick

1870-1874
646/1 :: Govan Church
646/2 :: Park
646/3 :: Partick

1875-1881
646/1 :: Govan Church
646/2 :: Partick

1882-1912
646/1 :: Plantation
646/2 :: Govan
646/3 :: Partick

After 1912, these areas were absorbed into 644 (Glasgow) as districts therein.

1913-1934
644/20 :: Plantation
644/21 :: Govan
644/22 :: Partick

To follow them after 1934, you would need to know your Glasgow local geography better than I do. Boundaries and district names changed. See http://www.talkingscot.com/rds/city-rds-glas.htm for more information.

Since the children were all born before statutory records began there births may not have been registered with the established church.

Thanks for that Andrew P - I have printed it out as i am forever looking for the relevant area. Now i can easily refer to it by my side.
Annette, I was thinking exactly the same thing - I tried to ring Partick library this morning but it keeps on ringing out. Maybe the weather is affecting them. I have emailed them to ask if there would be any other explanation why i can't find them. I have the eldest daughter Isabel's marriage cert for 1857. She went back to Perth to get married in accordance with the Established Church of Scotland.
I will let you know if i get a reply.

All Glasgow Library staff were sent home today because of the weather.

I don't think you'll get any joy from Partick Library - only The Mitchell hold Family History records.

Hi Annette,

Just watched the News and i thought that would be the case. As the email address for Partick Library is libraries@glasgowlife.org.uk I am hoping it might eventually be picked up by The Mitchell. Here's hoping!
