Reuben PEARCE and Agnes KERR, married 1895 in Camlachie

Post by RonJohnNOLA » Thu Jun 28, 2012 7:57 pm

Hi,

Found their marriage certificate at ScotlandsPeople. Very useful site!! However, I'm having trouble interpreting the penmanship... :(

The "Usual Residence" column shows both living at the Clyde Iron Works, even though she was a domestic servant. Company housing, maybe?

Also, the wife's parents' names are a bit confusing. What I see written is:

Code: Select all

Jos. Hodges,
    (deceased).
    John Kerr.
Gardener.
    and
Mary Kerr.
Jos Fulton
It's written with a fountain pen both "Jos" are in script, so I might not be interpreting it correctly.

Is Jos. Hodges her biological father?

Am I completely misinterpreting the marriage certificate?

Sincerely,
Ron

Firstly Welcome to talking Scot

The 2nd Jos. you see will actually be MS - meaning Maiden surname of the bride/groom's mother.

The usual format would be:
John Smith
farmer
Mary Smith
MS Brown
with [Deceased] if that were the case.

Would the Jos. Hodges part be from the groom's details? and be his mother's maiden name?

Hi Ron & welcome to [talkingscot] .
Yes you have misinterpreted the certificate it actually both sets of parents- Enoch Pearce(Labourer)/Jemima Bailie Pearce Maiden name Hodges and
John Kerr(Gardener) & Mary Kerr Maiden name Fulton.Good hunting I had a look as I have Kerrs as one of my main lines.
Researching:SCOTT,Taylor,Young,VEITCH LINLEY,MIDLOTHIAN
WADDELL,ROSS,TORRANCE,GOVAN/DALMUIR/Clackmanannshire
CARR/LEITCH-Scotland,Ireland(County Donegal)
LINLEY/VEITCH-SASK.Canada
ALSO BROWN,MCKIMMIE,MCDOWALL,FRASER.

Wow. I was so wrong I'd have climbed Mt Everest (noting that I'm a dedicated couch potato!) before such an interpretation would ever have occurred to me.

Now I can vaguely see what I thought was "Jos" can be "MS".

So the two mothers were born Jemima Baillie Hodges and Mary Fulton?

Thanks, Wilma & joette. =D>

It helps to know what 'should' be there, we've spent years going skelly eyed  trying to decifer ancient handwritting.

Have a look at Scotlands Peoples info pages:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Conte ... ?r=554&403
for an idea of what you should be able to find.
