dates on certificates

Post by gwennypenny » Wed Aug 22, 2012 4:32 pm

Hello. When I subtract the year of the marriage from the years they state they are on the certificate I get a birth year. It always seems out by a year. Am I doing it wrong? meaning they arent 24 when they got married ...would it be they were GOING INTO their 24th year? (using as example)

marriage is 1871
says they are each 26
so they are both born 1845...but then other things say they are 1846.

Gwenny :)

Depends when in the year they were born & when in the year they were married!

Hi Gwenny
Check the marriage date. They didn't have annual leave or public holidays back then. Some folk only had New Years Day as their holiday so you often find that although the marriage took place in the old year it was not recorded until the start of the new year. the Banns would be called on the required three occasions in the week(s) before the wedding took place.
The same problem happens with Births too.
