Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could please help me find the marriage between James Jenkins and Martha Salvage, 1860-75 or about that time. I've tried wild cards on the names, no joy!
Thought i'd cracked it yesterday when i found Martha had been married before to James Thomson/Thomas in 1853 in Blantyre. Using the new name of Martha Thomas with James Jenkins only gave me a Maggie Thomas 1881 Glasgow, with her fathers surname being Thomas. So near and yet so far!
The other spelling of Marthas surname in the 1851 census Blantyre is Selvedge.
Thank you
Ray

Hi, A Warm Welcome to Talking Scot
Have you any of their children's birth certificates? the date and place of marriage should on those [from 1861 I think]
Although if they weren't actually 'married' they still put a place and date on the birth records.... but it is a place to start.

Thanks WilmaM,
I'll try that one.
Sometimes one looks with blinkered eyes not seeing the easier way to go around things, a wee nudge from someone else helps. As my father used to say to me, "Aye son, ye always seem tae take the lang way roond tae get tae a conclusion". How true he was.
Thanks
Ray

Sometimes the quickest road forward isn't the one straight ahead!
Is this your Martha in 1841?

Yes that's them in the 1841 census as Salvage.
In the 1851 census the name changes to Selvidge.

Re: James Jenkins Martha Salvage
Searching the IGI and census records I'm beginning to wonder if they had any children
They had plenty of wee boarders and adopted at least one of them.
Looking at the 1881 census (if have the correct family) and trying to find any of these children born to a James Jenkins and Martha Selvidge (and variants) at the IGI brings up nothing even if I try using Martha's maiden name. I can see that she had a son William to her first husband but the only likely Jenkins birth at SP is wee Maggie.
James Jenkins 58
Martha Jenkins 48
Alexr Jenkins 17
James Jenkins 15
John Jenkins 8
Martha Jenkins 7
Maggie Jenkins 6
Margaret McPherson 8 Mo
But then again maybe I have the wrong family.
So Ray........could you put me out of my misery and tell us if you got anywhere with Wilma's advice.
Regards,
Annette

Re: James Jenkins Martha Salvage
Hi Annette,
Thanks.
I think you've got the correct family ok. Didn't know William was by her first marriage, that explains the big gap in the birth years.
My link to the family is young Martha born 1876 (aged 7 on that census). In her 1901 marriage certificate, parents were James Jenkins and Martha Salvage. These are the only ones that i've found that fit that description.
The main reason for looking for the marriage c.1870, was to try to get James Jenkins parents. He's hard to track down.
Just realised i'm down to 3 credits on SP. Buy some more today and help put you out of your misery.
All the best
Ray
Thanks.

Re: James Jenkins Martha Salvage
I think this could be James with his grandparents in 1851 at Bothwell -
William Thomson 67 born Barony
Mary Thomson 68 born Barony
James Jenkins 22 born Rutherglen, grandson
John Connal 10
Margret Malone 9
The only thing that's bugging me is, in 1861 Martha gives her birthplace as Carlisle (again if I have the right family). Got to dash to work now and don't have time to find the census again.

Annette

Re: James Jenkins Martha Salvage
Hello Ray,
Have you tried to find James' death certificate to get his parents' names? In the 1891 census they are in Hamilton, Lanark and don't appear in 1901. On SP there is a James Jenkins who died in Hamilton in 1894. His age is off a bit though
-- he's only 61 in the index. Have you looked at this one?
All the best,
Sarah

I saw that one too and wondered. Maybe a neighbour gave the information and thought she was born in England? Carlisle is only 10 miles from Gretna, where she has reported being born in the other censuses.
1861
Ed & Glasgow Road, Bothwell, Lanarkshire
James Thomson, 35, Head, born Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Coal Miner
Martha Thomson, 30, Wife, born "Carlile," England, House Keeper
William Thomson, 7, Son, born Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scholar
All the best,
Sarah
