Birth 1857 Rathven ?.....

Due to the fab Moray sight

i am spending more money on S/P again double checking info i find ! On some of the poor relief info they have given me it says my gtx3 have a daughter Elizabeth who was 22 in 1875 making b/y 1853. So i looked for her on Moray and she is on there but her mothers name is wrong it says Elspeth when it should say Mary re death cert i just got off S/P which puts her age 25 in 1882 making b/y 1857. Nothing unusual about that but i cant find her birth at all and i have checked the igi search 1857 =/- 10 years.
Can anyone help me

A parent search on the online IGI produces these children to William Donaldson and Mary Shaw.

WM. DONALDSON - Christening: 25 APR 1847 Rathven, Banff
ALEXANDER DONALDSON - Birth: 22 MAY 1856 Rathven, Banff
JAMES DONALDSON - Birth: 14 SEP 1857 Rathven, Banff
PETER DONALDSON - Birth: 25 MAR 1860 Elgin, Moray
ALEXANDER DONALDSON - Birth: 02 FEB 1863 Elgin, Moray
JOHN DONALDSON - Birth: 02 JUL 1865 Elgin, Moray
JOHN DONALDSON - Birth: 14 APR 1867 Elgin, Moray

No sign of Elizabeth. My best guess is that she was born pre-1855. You need the 1861 census to give a (hopefully) more accurate age, and hence birth year.

Hello Tracey,

although her brother recorded her age as 25 on death in 1882, she was 25 on the 1881 census and 17 in 1871. The likelihood is that she was born before statutory registrations, and the OPR records are not necessarily available.

I did a OPR search as well. Cant remeber if i did a name variant on that one though

We must have posted at the same time ! I have those census and her death confirmed them for me on 1881 so at least now i know it IS them

Hello Tracey,

OPR records are not available for several reasons, but the main reason from 1843 forwards in time was because of ministers breaking away from the Church of Scotland and setting up other churches. Records may not have been sent to GROS, if indeed they were kept.

From the list of names above (all male), there is a big gap between 1847 and 1856. Elizabeth and Margaret were (supposedly) 17 and 15 in the 1871 census, so perhaps there was a problem between 1847 and the start of statutory records in 1855.

Hello Sporran

I remember speaking to a Canon in Buckie to see if my gtx2 grandmother could have been buried in his churchyard as she was married there and he very kindly looked in his records 1899 and he said that the Priest / Vicar at the time was the worst records keeper it had ever had !.
But he couldnt find her ......i feel another posting coming on.......... Poor burials in Buckie ?
