Jane Marchbank DOB App 1850 Born Crawfordjohn

Post by jjlmary312 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 11:28 pm

Hi,

Can anyone tell me the names of her parents as I can not read them on the marriage record. She married in Dec 1867 in Crawfordjohn. If anyone can tell me the exact DOB and DOD I would appreciate it.

Hi jjlmary312,

The handwriting was not bad on that certificate. It reads as follows:
  • James Brown, Stone Dyker
    Grizzle Brown, M.S. Renwick

    James Marchbanks, General Labourer
    Elizabeth Marchbanks, M.S. Williamson
Whose DOD and DOB? Jane's or her parents? Jane's death certificate is easily found from the information on the marriage certificate. Search for Jane Marchbank, other surname Brown, and you will get two results. As you already know from the messages in your other posts where to expect her to be, the choice is easy for you to make. Her DOD will be found there.

As for her DOB, that depends if there was an entry in the Parochial Register (what became the OPR) for her birth or more likely her baptism. First of all you should seek her in the censuses so that you can narrow down where and what range of years you should be looking in. Then you can look for the OPR on ScotlandsPeople, or a reference to it on the online IGI (Familysearch). It could be that no record existed or survives now, so don't be disppointed if nothing turns up.

All the best,

AndrewP

** edited in later: A quick look at the OPRs on ScotlandsPeople shows Jane (as Jean) and seven of her siblings. Happy hunting on SP for you. Search for Marchbank* and parent name Williamson between 1800 and 1854 to find them all, and another similar group in the same parish (maybe cousins?). Make sure that you put the asterisk on the end of Marchbank, so that the search looks for Marchbank and Marchbanks.
