Grace Gordon McNeilly.....

Post by JustJean » Fri Sep 16, 2005 12:30 pm

Well I finally found her! And no thanks to the handy dandy maiden and married surname search facility either!! Seems the attendent at Gartloch Asylum gave her name as Grace Gordon McNeilly...it's just that it got indexed with Gordon being a middle name...and not a maiden name  .....so one more lesson learned the hard way!

Now for my dilemma.....Grace died 8 March 1901 at the asylum...E. Dist, Cadder, Lanark age 72. Her usual residence is named as 3 Caithness Street, Glasgow. The only Caithness St I find is in the West End near the University?? Anyhow.....I have no way of knowing how long she might have been at the Asylum. Since a usual residence is stated I'm guessing not that long. Her husband was dead (which I would love to find his death too but one thing at a time!!)......I know she had one son Thomas Beggs McNeilly and family living at Myrtle Street, St. George in the Fields for the 1901 census. I know she had one other son Alexander that I've lost after his marriage in 1873 and his wife died in 1874 both Milton District. Any chance of finding out who was living at 3 Caithness Street on the 1901 census???? Ok....let's make this easier then.....anyone care to look for Grace and perhaps her hubbie William on the 1881 census (still waiting for my replacement disks to arrive  )??? William was a bleacher....Grace is named as a shirt finisher on her DC. Both were born Ireland.

Thanks
Jean

Hi Jean

Me again. Grace is shown on the 1881 census as Grace McNellie - Head - Widowed aged 50, Shirt Maker, born Ireland. She has a boarder by the name of Joseph Allan also from Ireland. Her address is 38 Milton Lane, Barony, Lanark.

Hope this helps

Jean

If you contact Alistair Tough at A.Tough@archives.gla.ac.uk he will be able to tell you if there are extant records for this asylum.

An update from the front.......

1. Still waiting for a reply from Mr Tough re: Gartloch extant records.....

2. Jack has graciously provided me with a poor relief app for Grace Gordon McNEILLY which was filed in 1891. In it her husband William is named as a pensioner from the 80th Regiment, born Ireland, died 15 years previous in Barnhill Poorhouse.

Children:
John age 43 Married ,West Indies 6 children
Alex age 41 Widower, West Indies
Thos age 37, Married, 7 Myrtle St, Baker, 6 children

3. 1891 Census for Caithness Street does not reveal Grace Gordon McNEILLY living there......but at no. 9 Caithness St. there is a

Robert McNEILLY age 52 Iron Moulder b. Ireland
MargaretMcNEILLY age 51 b. Glasgow
Robert McNEILLY u/m son age 22 Iron Moulder b. Glasgow
William CAMPBELL u/m step-son age 24 Iron Moulder b. Glasgow

sooooooooooo.....

Now I have the DC for William McNEILLY at the Poorhouse which I had already purchased but blown right over because he was named as married..... but no wife's name...no parents names.....and his occ was soldier. This is pretty much a dead end....(no puns intended  )

And a chase down of the Robert McNEILLY from the 1891 census above proves that he is the son of William McNEILLY and Ann MORROW McNEILLY WILSON. The above Robert and Margaret tying the knot in 1882 and each being on their second marriage. Robert's mom being deceased in 1882 but not appearing in any formation I can find on SP after 1855.

Looks like I've just added more odd shaped pieces and increased the puzzle size from a 1000 piece to about a 1500.......and still aren't sure they even belong in my tree
