Missing Family

Post by amacke4344 » Thu Jul 18, 2013 1:12 am

Hi

First post on here so forgive me if i do anything wrong.
The questions i have is where would i find the records of my gg grandparents ?
They are down in the census in 1851 as boarders and they were both certainly alive up to 1856/57 but there is no trace of deaths/marriage anything.
The names were James Airlie b 1811 ? in Glasgow and Mary Brown b 1813 ish in Falkirk,
I have looked everywhere Scotlands People etc and can find no trace.
Any suggestions would be great as to where i have gone wrong/where to look.
Thanks
Allan

Hi Allan

And welcome to Talking Scot :D

Just to make sure we have the correct couple, is this the 1851 census entry you mentioned?
(from Freecen at http://www.freecen.org.uk )

Glasgow -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 3
13 Little Dowhill Street
HANNAH Ann Head W F 40 - Guernsey - - See page 32 for further occupants
HANNAH James Son U M 13 Reed Maker, Weaver Ireland - -
HANNAH Samuel Son - M 8 Scholar Ireland - -
AIRLIE James Lodger M M 40 Quary Laborer Lanarkshire - Glasgow
AIRLIE Mary Lodger M F 38 Washer Etc Stirlingshire - Falkirk
AIRLIE William Lodger - M 5 - Lanarkshire - Glasgow
AIRLIE James Lodger - M 4m - Lanarkshire - Glasgow

Did they go on to have mnore children to your knowledge? Any child born between 1855-1859 should have the date and place of the marriage mentioned. (this was discontinued for a spell in the 1860s then resumed) Let's hope they had a child in 1855, as that year gives far more information than any subsequent year. The name of their first child mentioned here suggests that James father's name was very possibly William.
How do you know they were still alive around 1856-7?

From the ages of the children with them, if these are the correct people, they probably married about 1845-46.

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley - I wonder if this is perhaps how Allan knows at least Mary was still alive in 1857 -

Name: Helen Airley

Birth Date: 13 Oct 1857
Birthplace: CALTON,GLASGOW,LANARK,SCOTLAND
Father's Name: James Airley
Mother's Name: Mary Brown

So Allan is Helen your ancestor and if so who did she go on to marry and where?

Annette

The only Helen/Ellen I can see at the moment was at Gorbals in 1861. Her father is James but his birth date and location (from Ancestry) are totally different from the James in 1851.

Flora Gallacher 55
Charles Noble 80
James Airlie 40 boarder, dock labourer, born Thornliebank, Renfrewshire
William Airlie 17
Joseph Airlie 5
Ellen Airlie 3

Annette

Hi Lesley and Annette

Yes that is the info i got from the 1851 census.
My g grandfather Joseph was born 1855/56 and his sister Helen/Ellen was born 1858/59 so i know at least Mary Brown was alive until then.
I am just wondering maybe the enumerators got the ages wrong or did they not know the date of there own birth.
I can find Joseph and Helen living in the same house at 1881 as Joseph was then married.
Certainly by 1876 when Joseph married Elizabeth Campbell both his parents were listed on the certificate as deceased.
As i say i have looked everywhere and can find no trace of death or them living anywhere after 1851 so any help or guidance would be great.
I dont even know if i have got 2 seperate families mixed up or am i on the right track.

Thanks
Allan

Hello Allan,

There is a death indexed at SP of a James Early in 1876 roughly the right age. I'm sorry I don't have enough credits to see what the district is but it's not Calton or Gorbals where you might expect it to be if this was your James Airlie.

Regards,
Annette.

Sorry I accidentally posted this before finished.

Age at death is always a bit iffy so they're all possible. Have you discounted each of these?

Robert

BTW I searched for James *rl* in Glasgow & DOB 1811 + or - 5 years.
