My cousin's marriage is registered twice but both records have the same Gros data number. the groom's surname is different. I looked up the groom's birth and there are two registrations one in each of the names he was married under but again both certs have the same Gros data number??
Anyone help with an explanation?

Re: double registrations in Statutory births and marriage
Hi Elliottrambler,

At birth, I am guessing the parents were unmarried, but both parents' names appeared on the birth certificate, so the child could have been know by either surname, so both surnames were indexed. At the time of his marriage, the same reasoning applied: he could have used either surname since birth, so he was indexed by both surnames. So, in both birth and marriage (one birth and one marriage - hence one certificate number for each occasion), but two surname options, so indexed by both. If these details were known to the person registering his death, that too could be indexed by both surnames.
All the best,
AndrewP
