Missing marriage in Glasgow

Hi. I have a James McKenna born 14/12/1860 in High Church and note that parents James & Hannah were married April 2, 1860 in Glasgow. Can't find the record in ScotlandsPeople.

According to family search - James McKenna born High Church, Glasgow 14 Dec 1860 had parents Charles McKenna and Hannah Cooney - 5 children but no sign of a parent marriage on family search - an irregular marriage perhaps in kirk session records?

Hi Dennis,

If any of the children were born in 1855, or 1861 onwards in Scotland, then their birth certificate(s) should tell you where and when the parents were married. Sometimes the marriage info changed on the different birth certificates, it can be worth looking at each of the birth certificates (apart from 1856 to 1860 where the marriage info was not normally given on the birth certificates).

Also, if the marriage info that you already have is correct, then it is possible that the spelling of the names was not the same on the marriage certificate as on the birth certificate(s); or has been mistranscribed onto the index on SP.

** later edit ** - I had a look at a couple of the birth certificates, and both pointed to the marriage as given by Trish above. Then I agree with Dennis, there is no sign of this marriage on SP, not even when using wildcards to allow for spelling variations and an amount of mistranscription. So Trish's suggestion of an irregular marriage (never subsequently registered) looks very likely.

Knowing they were RC from previous posts I had a search in the Catholic registers and found a James McKenna marrying an Ann Co*n*ey on 15th July 1861. Worth a look ?

I tried the same wildcards with the stats and came up with nothing but if you try Ann C* you get one hit in 1861.

Later ...................looked at the IGI and her name is given as Convary.

In the 1861 census Charles & Hannah are both there with the same surname; also listed is their soon to be deceased first born child James, as well as 2 lodgers. Charles & Hannah are both listed as having been born in Ireland, as are the 2 lodgers (John & Mary Smith).

In the 1891 census there's the widow Hannah, her son Charles and her niece Sarah Jane Cooney age 19 from England.
