HI
I am looking for the birth record of the above person and also the death cert of the above person. I have managed to find out he married in Airdrie in 1859 to a Elise Jane Cudie but cannot find out where he died. I have found out she died Dec 1896 and it is recorded as Eliza Jane Howie. I think his parents were Robert Howie and Mary Donalley but am not sure as I cannot read the marriage cert very well. Regards
Caroline

Hi Caroline,
On Eliza Jane Howie's death certificate, is she listed as "married to...", or "widow of..."? Assuming the information given there is correct, that should at least narow down your search for his death to before or after her death. The next approach is to find them in the censuses, and see when there is a couple, and when there is a widow or widower. Then hopefully you are down to a 10 year or less window, and a fair guess as to where his death is likely to have taken place, and an estimate of his age at death.
All the best,
Andrew

Hi
On the copy of the document for Eliza Jane Howie it says married to Thomas Howie. For docquet wide infra? not seen this before. Thomas was 48 in the 1881 census and 1891 she was the head of the household. Cannot find nothing of his death. Any further suggestions. Thanks for your help. It is appreciated.

Hi Caroline,
The phrase "Vide docquet infra" is commonly found following the last entry in any Scottish birth, marriage or death register. I believe the translation is "for docquet, see below". The docquet found following should be the signatures of the registrar and the examiner, and a count of the pages used.

Re: Thomas Howie DOB App 1837
Hi again Caroline,
On looking at the 1891 census, Eliza declares herself as married rather than widowed, so the implication there is that Thomas is alive, but not at home on census night. On her 1896 death certificate, Eliza is declared as married rather than widowed, so again the implication is that Thomas is alive somewhere at that time.
Do you have marriage certificates (or death certificates, particularly if they died young) for any of their children after their mother's death? If so, is Thomas described as deceased or not?
All the best,
AndrewP
