William Watson Born in 1865 Blantyre

Post by jjlmary312 » Fri Feb 14, 2014 1:28 am

Hi
The above person married a Margaret Howie in 1885 and I know he has died. I cannot work out what I am doing wrong as I cannot come up with his birth record on Scotlands people. His dad was Wm Watson and mother Janet McLuckie if I have spelt it correctly. Any help would be appreciated in pointing me in the right direction to get a copy of the birth record. :) =D>

Hi jjlmary,

The first clue is, he wasn't born in Blantyre.

If you do a parent search on the online IGI, you will see listed seven children born to this couple up to 1874, when the IGI stops for births in Scotland. One of them is William. The IGI says he was born in Bothwell parish. However, Bothwell parish was split into three districts. One of these was Holytown, and that is where you will find him indexed on ScotlandsPeople.

All the best,

AndrewP

BENT CEMETERY, Hamilton, Burial Records 1853-1949

WATSON, Margaret Howie, age 78, date of burial 21 January 1924, 44 South Bridge St., Airdrie
WATSON, Margaret Howie, age 15, date of burial 16 March 1923, Craigneuk

I thought these might be your relations.

Cheers,

Hi
Thanks for all the information on the above person. Is Craigneuk a district of Wishaw?
Looking at Margaret Howie Watson aged 15. Is there a free website for Scotlands census
and do death records appear after 100 year or have I got that wrong?

See OS map showing Craigneuk

FreeCen has transcribed some parts of some of Scotland's censuses and has them online free of charge, but it is far from a complete set of the censuses. Ancestry and FindMyPast (and maybe some others) have transcriptions of more of the censuses for a fee. The only site to have the actual census pages online is ScotlandsPeople, on a pay per view basis.

ScotlandsPeople has the death certificates up to 50 years ago available online on a pay per view basis. Newer than 50 years, the death certificates are closed, but the index can be viewed. (The same applies for births up to 100 years, and marriages up to 75 years ago). If you can get in to the ScotlandsPeople Centre or one of its outposts in Scotland, certificates up to date can be viewed.

All the best,

Hi

I had a look at the 1923 death certificate for Margaret Howie Watson, who was born out of wedlock to Jean Watson, farm servant, domiciled at 34 United Buildings, Craigneuk, Wishaw. This Jean Watson was the daughter of William Watson and Margaret Howie (born 23 October 1890 at 82 Townhead Street, Hamilton). She subsequently married, on 5 June 1908, at 51 Clyde Place, Motherwell, John Colquhoun (son of Robert Colquhoun, fishmonger, and Isabella Paterson).

Your William Watson died on 21 November 1943 at Motherwell and was interred in Bent Cemetery, Hamilton, as the following Bent Cemetery burial record shows.

WATSON, William, age 78, date of burial 24 November 1943, Motherwell

Cheers,
