My Great Grandfather- John Brown born 9 Feb 1875

Post by gloftness » Tue Dec 30, 2014 1:29 am

My great grandfather John Brown, was born to Duncan Brown (1840-1897) and Jane Douglas (1842-1879). He married Mary Hawthorn Murray in 1910 and moved to Rhode Island in the USA in 1913.

I have his life quite well documented until 1921, when his wife died in Pawtucket Rhode Island. My grandmother told me that he just left and was never heard from again.

I think that he may have returned to Scotland and I've searched and spent a huge amount of money searching Scotlandspeople.gov.uk, but I cannot find anything. He was in the military and fought in the Boer War. I've found some of his military records. I've been on a quest to find out what happened to him and where he died for a couple years and have found absolutely nothing. I've traced his siblings as best I can to try to see if there might be a clue, but nothing.

Any help would be much appreciated. I've exhausted all the sources I've been able to find in the USA for a trace of him, so I feel pretty sure that he must have left the country.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Here he is in 1930 -

It looks as though Wilhelmina died in 1936 and was buried under her previous married name Andres...I don't know what to make of that. There are a number of John Browns buried at Lucas, Ohio but whether any one of them is your ancestor............ :?:

Annette,

THANK YOU!!! I've spent hours and hours hunting through records and you've now found John Brown for me. I'm 100% sure that what you found is correct. The lesson for me is that even if you are certain of a birth date, it certainly helps to widen the search. I have locked my searches to the year 1875 as I knew that's when he was born. The marriage record shows an earlier birth date, but I know the record is correct for his marriage. Occupation, parents, immigration all match as does his signature.

Please send me a private message. (I think you can do that here)

Annette really made my day!

Greg

=D> Annette's a star :D I think the birth day and month are a giveaway here-- it would not be the first time that a spouse had moved their age to be more in keeping with the age of their spouse on the marriage record.

[cheers]
