Post by Baldy » Fri Sep 18, 2015 1:10 am

Hi All
I am need of some information on Robert Sproat. It is believed that he married Mary Beattie in Kirkcudbright,in 1859.
The only information that I have received is that Mary was born in Troqueer in 1836 to William Beattie & Janet Agnes Callander
Robert ?????? believe that he was born C:-1830 in Dumfries

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance
Ted (au)

Hi Ted
The information you have about Mary is correct, she is in the OPR.
Robert is also there to be found in the OPR born in 1829 to William Sproat and Janet Mure in Twinholm, Kirkudbright
So [TS_welcome] and good hunting

The marriage record is to be found on Scotland's people - the official pay per view site for Scottish records.
Looking at that will give you both their parents' names and occupations and the couple's ages too.

Using that information you can check the census records.
!841 and 1851 should give you them at home with the rest of the family, 1861 onwards will give you the names of any children they subsequently had.
The images can be found at SP, but you can check on Freecen for transcripts free [though not all are there yet]

Sproat seems to have been common name in Kirkcubrightshire so knowing his age will help weed out the right one.

Thank you both very much for that information.
I did not know that such informative information would be on a marriage certificate at that year.
Again I thank you

From 1855 in Scotland there's a lot of information on the records. - 1855 gives a LOT more but sadly it didn't last.

SP has lots of information:
