Daniel Smith born 2 Aug 1881

Children of my Great Grandparents Mary and Peter Smith - Born from 1876 - 1885

I have census and birth records for the children of Mary McCallum Smith and Peter Smith, and none include a son called Daniel, however while on Ancestry tonight, I came across this name with parents recorded as Mary McCallum Smith and Peter Smith.

How can I be sure that this is my Great Grandparents son, when he is not recorded on any census from 1881 onwards that I can find. Perhaps he died at birth, but I can't find this record so far.

Is it possible that a child's death would not be recorded?

Hoping someone can shed some light on this for me.

Hello Isabella,

I see that Peter Smith and Mary McCallum were married on 4 Nov 1873 in Tradeston, Glasgow

In the Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms database on Ancestry (which I assume is what you saw) Daniel Smith was born 2 Aug 1881 in Tradeston.

The birth is there on scotlandspeople.gov.uk
There is also a death of a Daniel Smith, age 0, in Tradeston in 1881.

If you download them you should be able to tell by the parents, occupations, etc. if you have the right birth and death.

Thank you Sarah and Trish, that is really helpful.

It is quite strange even though I never knew my Great Grandparents I feel a kind of sadness for them as I too lost a baby, but a bit older than their son.

I never really gave it too much thought about the difference in years from my Grandfather's birth to his sisters, but this definitely explains it. I once paid for some research and this is where I got the names of children from, there was no mention of a Daniel, so quite a shock.
