Search parameters?

Post by billymac » Thu Jan 15, 2026 11:58 pm

Happy New year all.
Looking for a bit of guidance on how to search Scotland's People. Let me explain. Many years ago I did a search on Old Parish Records for birth/baptism of a Mary Traynor (the name has variable spellings), born around 1812 using the variations available back then. I got quite a number of results (as per the attached image). I can no longer get those results using the later search variations. I'd really appreciate some guidance on what parameters to use to achieve the same search results today. [cheers]
Regards, Bill.

A pic of the old result and old parameters I used is hosted here:

Hi Billymac,

Imgur is no longer accessible in the UK - since September 2025 their page says. So UK folks here have no sight of your old result and parameters.

All the best,

Thanks Andrew. I have edited the original post to have a different link.
There are no results any longer with "Church of Scotland" and "Other Churches" but there are results with the the "Roman Catholic Church" (using "phonetic matching"). However the old results and the new results are very different. If I put "Trainer" in with 'phonetic matching" I get different results with only that exact name.

billymac,

At first sight your original table appears to contain 8 separate births but in reality only contains 4 because they have been duplicated for whatever reason. It is also apparent from the Parish of births on the right hand side that they refer to births in the Roman Catholic Church.
If you use TR*N*R as the surname with your other criteria the same 4 births should appear on ScotlandsPeople
Perhaps I am stating the obvious.

Hi Billymac,

I can get the same set of 4 results [not showing the 4 duplicates] using the following search criteria.

You searched for - Church type: Catholic registers - Births and baptisms, Surname: "tr*a*n*r", Surname options: "Wildcards allowed", Forename: "mary", Forename options: "Names that begin with", Year range: "from 1810 to 1816", County/city: "ALL"

All the best,

AndrewP

Thank you so much Andrew. You've made it a lot clearer. I've a much better idea now on how to manipulate the search
