Wedding Banns.....

Post by Bertha » Thu Oct 27, 2005 6:04 pm

Have just been into NAS to look at the Proclamatin of Banns Register for the church my gr grandparents were married in. I have copy of entries from SP stating they married in the Manse of St Thomas's in Leith in 1906 yet there is no record of this in the above mentioned register. As marriage took place in January 1906, also checked 1905 also the minute book for same period in the hope it might have been mentioned.
Was it not a requirement for banns to be posted back then?
Here's hoping someone can help

banns

Post by ASGROOMBRIDGE » Fri Oct 28, 2005 11:06 pm

Hello better late than never,

I had the same problem and was told it was not uncommon for the minister to pocket the money paid and not put the Banns in the book. This came from a historian in family history, no wonder we have trouble finding people.

Some things never change.

Thanks for that Audrey.
This seems to have happened to another two of mine, one in 1872 and one in 1883 all in the same area of Leith at sister churches. The 1883 one I can't even find on SP even though the date is on their children's birth certificates!

If the marriage is recorded on SP, then the entry relating to the banns/marriage was made in the Old Parochial Register, not the KIrk Session Minutes. The OPR you need is next door to NAS at New Register House .........

There was no need or requirement for any entry to be made in the Kirk Session minutes book.

What was the nature of the entries that you saw in the "Proclamation of Banns Register", - purley financial, or full details of the couple?

Hi David
I went into the archives and asked what I should look at for St Thomas's Leith, it was they who suggested the Proclamation of Banns Register, I thought the minute book may have told us what the minister Mr Fleming had been upto that week but seems he didn't report his doings.
The Proclamatin of Banns told you name of both parties and their addresses, sometimes giving the name of the brides father depended on who was making the entry it seemed. There was no mention of any monies changing hands.
You mention the OPRs are they available at NRH for the periods 1882 to 1910? I will be putting my name down for the LFHS visit next month and have a look at them. I need to find out if my gr grandfather's parents are correct on his 1906 marriage entry at NRH to help solve a family mystery!

Silly me

Didn't realise that we were talking about such a late date ............

I'd have to double check but I'm fairly sure that the NRH OPRs don't go past 1875 ......

As I understand it, the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Scotland) Act 1854 called for the OPRs up to 1819 to be handed over in 1855, and the OPRs of 1820 to 1854 to be handed over in 1885.

I assume that any registers made by the churches from 1855 were for them to keep, or hand over to the Scottish Record Office (nowadays known as the National Archives of Scotland) if they wanted to, without any legal obligation.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thanks David and Andrew, will check again with archives to see if they have the actual registers as I am sure that is what I actually asked them for the last time. I did contact Sth Leith Parish Office at one point and they did say all their old documents were there, maybe its in their stuff and not St Thomas's.
Have another week off before christmas so will rummage around in there again
