Hi folks, My first post to the forums and I hope you can help to resolve my brick wall. I obtained the following information from a copy of the 1914 school records of Kintulavaig, Harris.
Andrew JENNINGS b. December 25, 1903 at unknown. Mary JENNINGS b. May 18, 1907 at unknown. Both recorded in school records at Kintulavaig, Harris 1913 - 1914. Father recorded as Herbert JENNINGS, Hawker who died at Stornoway 1923. Mother unknown.
That's the sum total of the information I have. I cannot find a birth, marriage or death of either of these people in the SP website.
My other interests are: -
MORRISON, MACINTYRE, MACPHERSON, MACLELLAN, MACLEOD, GILLIES in Benbecula and South Uist 1770 - 1930
Many Thanks
Don

You've joined at a bit of a mad time. Hope you are enjoying the party.
There is a death recorded on SP of Herbert in 1923. Have you viewed the entry?

Hi Don,
Births online at ScotlandsPeople are restricted by a 100 year closure rule, so only births up to 1904 are currently online. I had a quick look on ScotlandsPeople and agree that there is no sign of Andrew Jennings born anywhere in Scotland in 1903 or 1904 (late 1903 birth could have been registered in 1904). The only Jen* surnames were Jenkins (and Andrew turned out to be the middle name of all 3).
Similarly, online marriages are resticted by a 75 year closure, and online deaths are restricted by a 50 year closure. So it is feasible that these people married and died in a period which is still not available online.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Re: Jennings of Stornoway
Hello Don,
Herbert James Jennings died in Stornoway during 1923, a hawker aged 42 and single. The likelihood is that the children were illegitimate and he did not sign the register, so the children were registered under their mother's surname. They may have reverted to her name.
Unfortunately, there is no facility to search without a surname, so your best chance lies in New Register House. A list of all births, by surname and forename, appears on index fiches at the end of each year, and is not restricted by any closure rules. A list of all Andrews in 1903 and Marys in 1907 should produce a common name, after which it is a simple matter (in NRH) to check the dates.
If you can not make the trip personally, there are researchers who would do this task for you, and costs should be reasonable.
Regards,
John

Many thanks, Andrew, Annette & John for a very prompt response to my posting. I'm so glad I posted as you have given me a new slant on how to tackle the problem. Yes, I have viewed the actual entry in the Registrar's Office in Stornoway in 1997, and also found his unmarked grave in Sandwick cemetery. He is also recorded in the 1901 Census of England and Wales living in Swanage, Dorset so he made rapid progress to the Outer Hebrides. I am sorely tempted to use a researcher, as you suggested, in an attempt to resolve this frustrating issue.
Kind regards
Don
