Reg of Cor Entr?.....

Post by Lahb » Sun Oct 30, 2005 7:43 pm

On two occasions I've come across notations on relatives birth or death registry pages. Being new to this I'm wondering where do I find this "extra" information? I am overseas so have been using the Scotlands People site for much but have yet to be able to find where these "added" parts are.

On one (Birth 1871, Margaret McFarlane, Dumbarton, Dumbarton born to Andrew McFarlane and Agnes McFarlane - nee Innes - on June 16 1871) - there is a notation on the side reading:

Alteration of childs name see Reg of Cor Entr, Vol I p. 80 August 21, 1871

On the other: (Death of Henry Harkley McFarlane, 1947 died in Distric of Crail, county of Fife, air artificer Royal Navy - parents were James Campbell White McFarlane and Isabel (Isabella) McFarlane - nee Harkley of Dumbarton) there is a notation reading:

See Reg of Cor Ents Vol II p.20 May 15 1947

Any guidance on if I can find these "reg of cor ent "
(which I assume means Registration of Corrected Entries?) would be greatly appreciated.

For the moment, you can only access this information by ordering an extract of these register entries from GROS.

At some point in the hopefully near future the RCE info will be available as linked digitised images on the ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk site, but I have no idea of the likely timescale.

The birth RCE entry will contain the information referred to, - change of child's name; while the death RCE entry is unlikely to contain anything more than the confirmation by the Procurator Fiscal's doctor of the cause of death.

I'd have offered to have a look at these tomorrow when I'm in at New Register House, except that I have commissioned research that is likely to take me all of the time available ............

Thank you David for the information! What you've given me is great - I had a feeling there wasn't much more to be had off of these types of corrected entries - but I may go ahead and order the death extract of my great uncle. There always was a debate over why he died - one story about a war injury and another about an accident. The registry from Crail did have a mention of him being "found in his cabin" deceased so my curiosity certainly has been peaked :)
