Can't find death.....

Post by Cathy » Sat Nov 12, 2005 5:27 pm

Hi All,
I can't find death for Letitia Allan. I don't believe she married Joseph Graham. He died 1892 Dalry. A nephew was the informant, stating he was married to Letta Allan.
Her three daughters were illegitimate, all born Allan in Dalry.
I have the following:

1861 census: Old Mains of Pitcon, Dalry, Ayr. 587/00 013/00 009
Joseph Graham, Lodger, Marr., age 40, Waggoner, b. Ireland.
Latitia Allan, Lodger, Unm., age 30, Formerly Domestic servant, b. Ireland.
Jane Stevenston, Lodger, age 2, b. Dalry, Ayrshire.

1871 census: Mains of Pitcon, Dalry, Ayr. 587/00 013/00 008
Joseph Graham, Head, Marr., age 53, Waggoner, b. Ireland.
Letitia Allan, Unm., Housekeeper, age 35, b. Ireland.
Jane Stevenston, Boarder, Scholar, age 12, b. Dalry, Ayrshire.
Ann Graham, Daur., Scholar, age 8, b. Dalry.
Mary Graham, Daur., Scholar, age 5, b. Dalry.

1881: Dwelling: Mains Cottages
Census Place: Dalry, Ayr, Scotland
Joseph GRAHAM M 38 M Ireland. Rel: Head. Occ: Gen Lab
Letitia GRAHAM M 40 F Ireland. Rel: Wife
Mary GRAHAM U 15 F Dalry, Ayr, Scotland. Rel: Dau
William BURNS 2 M Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland. Rel: Boarder.

She is not stated as deceased at marriage of daughter Ann in 1884.
Any pointers?
Cathy

Hello Cathy,

Have you discounted the Letitia Allan who died in Ayrshire 1904 aged 73 yrs?

Bearing in mind a Letitia Allan married in 1893 in Ayrshire........

Hi Ian,
yes, I had discounted the 1904 death.
As Allan was her maiden name, the father on the death cert. looks like Wilson. I haven't checked the M.Cert. yet.

Hi Cathy,

The death cert looks like Letitia Wilsons who married James Allan in Glasgow, and was still in Glasgow in 1881....

Sorry about marriage cert......back to drawing board.

Update:
She is not Letitia Reid who died 1922. Parents Alexander Allan and Margaret Renfrew. Widow of 1st Robert Weir
2nd Auberon (should be Abraham) Reid.[/b]

Hi Cathy

In the 1891 Census Letitia is alive and well and living in Dalry with Joseph and also her granddaughter Letitia Love. I went looking for the grandaughter in 1901 and can't find her....and also can't find a death for her. I wonder if they left Scotland? Do you know where the daughters all ended up??? Haven't exhausted all the possibilities but am low on credits

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
many thanks for that. I have no idea why I didn't check 1891.
Daughter Ann married Walter Love 1884 Glasgow.
Ann died 1918 Glasgow. Cert. states mother deceased.

Hello Cathy,

have we missed the obvious? If she was generally known as Letitia Graham, then search for a death under that name, since the informant may not have known her history. If you put a birth year of 1835 ±10, then one of the 2 possibilities looks useful.

Hello Cathy,

hm! The 1897 death in Renfrew had as informant James Connell, son-in-law. Does that name ring a bell?

Where was she in 1901?

John
