Hi Alan
Welome to Talking Scot.
Ross is not the easiest of surnames to research in that area - in the 1851 census over 40% of the population in that area had the surname Ross so it can be a bit of a nightmare. Though Peter is not a frequent name in that area, I think. I had a look on IGI at the marriage you mention and interestingly I note that one Batch, an extract, M110644 has:
JANET ROSS
Marriages:
Spouse:
PETER ROSS
Marriage: 10 JAN 1834 Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
but another M110784 has:
JANET ROSS
Marriages:
Spouse:
PETER ROSE
Marriage: 10 JAN 1834 Nigg, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland
Rose is also a name which turns up in that area - not as frequently as Ross though. But worth bearing in mind.
Have you looked at the OPR entry for the marriage on microfilm? Looks like you are going to have to check both Fearn and Nigg, but there is always the chance that, if you are lucky, some information might be given in the entry about Janet's father which would at least give you some help. ...And with the name of Ross you are going to need all the help you can get!!
Best wishes
Lesley
p.s which census years have you seen them in? The census should give you Janet's place of birth which would also help narrow it down a a bit.
