Now call me cynical but in Feb.1869 your wife slighlty older model-about two years older than you with at least eight children dies.Your youngest is nine & the eldest 25.Your a Farmer with 50 acres & who & when do you remarry? Yes you pick an eigteen year old & marry her nine months after your Wife's demise. You were present but you couldnt give a reason & surprise no qualified medical practioner either.
Now I like to think the best of folk but a 46 marrying an eighteen yearold?
Not as bad as the 84 year old I know but sounds iffy to me.

Hi Joette
Don't think you have cause to be suspicious. Probably the best way he could find to ensure ongoing care of his children and she probably thought she was on to a good thing if he was a relatively prosperous farmer. I'm sure it happened a lot.
My husband's grandmother can be found in the 1901 Census in London as a domestic servant in the family of which Dad is off fighting the Boer War. At some point Wife 1 dies and before you know it Granny is married to the brave soldier and sailing off for good to South Africa in whichever order those events took place.
