Irish ancestors who settled in Ayrshire.....

Post by tomwatson06 » Sat Dec 17, 2005 10:56 pm

Grand father's eldest brother was born pre 1860 and the irish birth records only became statuary in 1864. Are there any records I could search which would enable me to find his D.O.B. from records held while he worked as a miner in Dalmellington, Ayrshire between 1880 and 1928.

Tom

If he died in Scotland then that will give you at least an approximate year of birth plus the names of his parents.

Irish ancestors who settled in Ayrshire

Hi
Thanks to all who have taken the time to reply to my question. The details I have about the family when living in Dalmellington are from the 1901 census and the birth records of the children. On the 1901 census Robert Watson and his wife Suzannah McVeigh but spelt McVea on the Irish records are living at 75 Benquhat, Dalmellington. Later on the birth records of some of the children the address given is 93 Benquhat, Dalmellington. His age on the census record is given as 45 and that of his wife as 41. His occupation on the census return is given as ironstone miner.
I do have details of when they died. However an accurate D.O.B. would help me persue details of their parents.
Many thanks
tom

As always it helps to read the question :!:

I didn't realise that you had his 1928 death, showing the names of his parents, - although you may have to ask GROS for a photocopy by post to determine his mother's maiden name...........

He died 4th October 1928 aged 72 giving derived probable years of birth 1856/55.

In the 1901 census, taken on 31st March, showed him as 46, giving derived probable years of birth of 1855/54.

Now, assuming that the ages reported were accurate, his date of birth has to be between 31st March and 4th October 1855.

Hi David,
Thanks for all your efforts but really what I think I was hoping to get was someone who might have Knowledge of records like O.A.P. records or rent books and where I could gain access to these.
I have details of Robert Watson parents children pre 1864 when the Irish records became statuatory. However since their marriage in 1852 there have been children recorded to 1880. Robert Watson (Snr) married Jemima Hill as a minor in 1852, but I also have children born to a Robert Watson thru marriage records and the wife's name on the birth certificates is not Jemima Hill. So I suspect Robert Watson (Snr) did more than mend pots and pans - his occupation was a tinsmith!
