Brick Wall.....

Post by Linda » Sun Jan 23, 2005 5:34 pm

Hi there

Can anyone help me to get rid of this brick wall. I have been searching Scotland's People for these ancestors, George Spence dob c1800 possibly in Turriff and his wife Margaret Hepburn dob 1800. they had a son George dob c1822 in Turrif who married Ann Wilson on 7/5/1855 at Banff. I can only assume that George and Margaret came from Turriff, but it is also likely that they are from the Dundee area as that is where they died. Does anyone have access to the census records to check it out?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Linda

Hi Linda

You will find young George's Death Certificate on SP. It was not a pleasant death. The year is 1863 and the place was Turriff so it will be easy for you to find. The father however is named as John Spence who was a Crofter and not George as you say in your posting and the informant was John Spence, brother. From this you will find on the IGI that his parents were married on 7/9/1805 in Forglen, Banff. Doing a parent search lists 6 children all born in Forglen and George's date of birth is 26/8/1819.

Hope this points you in the right direction

Good luck

Hi again Linda

You will also find John Spence's Death Certificate on SP in Forglen, Banff in the magical year of 1855 which has a wealth of info. It is easy to find. According to the death certificate he was born in Inverkeithing. His parents were John Spence and Janet Alexander.

Happy Hunting

Hello there

I've since did a little work on the info that you gave me and don't think that the George Spence you told me about is my ancestor.

My George Spence working backwards from my Granfather is:

Grandfather: George Reaper Spence dob 8/7/1881 at Turriff. He married Agnes Nicoll on20/7/1900.
This George died 4/7/1937.

G. Grandfather: George Spence dob 28/3/1855 at [Forfar] he married Barbara Reaper on 14/7/1876.
This George died 3/7/1918.

G.G. Grandfather George Spence: George Spence dob c1822. He married Ann Wilson 7/5/1854.

Regards
Linda
G.G.G. Grandfather George Spence dob c1800. He married Margaret Hepburn probably c1820.
Names that I am researching:- Gordon; Guthrie; Reaper; Spence; Maver; Anderson; Edwards; and many many more.

The 1863 death register entry found by AnnetteR clearly shows him as "married to Ann Wilson", aged 44, so born 1818/19, parents John SPENCE and Margaret SPENCE MS HEPBURN :!: , actually 26 AUG 1819
as you will see from http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true where you will find the details of George and 5 siblings, including the informant for his death register entry. There might be other siblings as IGI shows the marriage of the parents as 07 SEP 1805 Forglen and the youngest child born 1810, as is the case on the 1855 death register entry that Annette kindly pointed out for you. Being an 1855 death register entry, this shows you John's place of birth, and how long in Forglen, - looks like he moved there as a young man.

The 1855 birth of George was not in Forfar.

Many thanks. I've checked that out and you are correct. I don't know where I found his name as being George. No wonder I couldn't any information about him.

Jean was the eldest born in 1806, almost exactly a year after the marriage. The only child not listed in the IGI is Margaret who was born between John and George.

Margaret (Hepburn) Spence died in 1858 again in Forglen. The age is exactly right and the IGI has her birth and that of her brother.

Given John and Margaret's longevity (both near 80) there is an outside chance that a few of George's grandparents may appear in the 1841 census.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Linda

Looks like your brickwall has taken a few direct hits! Yippee!! It sure can be easy to get in the wrong generation or even go up the wrong branch with the overuse of a single first name. Standing joke in my family tree is....every time you look at it you 'get the Willies!' I'm curious about the other surnames you list interest in....I have a very remote interest in both Guthrie and Gordon...mine are both from Ayrshire. Have you made any progress on these names yet?....and if so hope you don't mind my asking....Where are your's from?

Hi Jean

I'm very pleased with the help that I have had on this site. :D Iwas using another site for my Aberdeen searches, but for one reason or another, the members don't interact the way they do on this site.

I'm replying to this from work, so can't tell you offhand if I have any Guthries and Gordon from Ayrshire. I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that they are all from around the Dundee and Forfar areas, where I come from myself.

I wil let you know if any of them pop up in the Ayrshire areas though.

Bye for now
