1919 Marriage, Neilston - suggestions on surname please?....

Hi all

I'm on a bit of a "scenic detour" on the strength of a hunch, and was trying to find out a little more about the couple on this marriage entry: Sam Smith and Annie McAulay. His parents I have no problems with - William Smith and Martha Connelly(apart from the fact I can't find a marriage* - I have a hunch about Ireland - if they are the family I'm looking for there is an Irish connection somewhere I think) .

However, I'm a bit stuck with the mother of Annie McAulay: Thomas McAulay's wife's name Catherine ? What it looks like to me does not seem to exist as a name on SP so I must be wrong. ...And again I can't find a marriage* for this pair either. (maybe Ireland too? - Ok, I admit it, I'd really like there to be an Irish connection - could you guess?? )

*only been trying this evening, so the blinkin' obvious may have escaped me!

Best wishes
Lesley

Oh but it does exist on SP, but not quite in the form on this marriage register entry, where it is shown as INEENAY :!:

Somehow, somewhere, - the minster filling in the marriage shcedule, or the registrar transcribing that info into the register of marriages, the "Mc" went walkies, ....... in other words, the surname is McINENY or some variant spelling as that surname is wide open to a range of spellings.

How do I know? ........ simple, when faced with a situation such as this, don't waste time trying to work it out, - instead look for other records, - in this case her death register entry, which is straightforward to find as the family hadn't moved.

And the marriage register entry has a very similar sounding surname, but spelt differently.

Hi David
INEENAY is exactly what I read it as, but then a surname search on SP turned up nothing. Thanks for the input. More credits needed on SP now!

Best wishes
