Another scrawly document needs help!.....

Post by ninatoo » Wed Jan 25, 2006 1:49 pm

Hi all!

I need your eagle eyes again for another certificate. I am almost sure that the last one I posted was written by the same scrawler in Camlachie!!! I cannot read this registrar's writing at all!

http://www.talkingscot.com/gallery/disp ... =11&pos=90

try this link if the above doesn't work!!

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-381

I am looking specifically at the marriage of Samuel McCormick and Catherine Mowatt. I am interested in what people come up with for nearly the whole entry!!!

Thanks in advance,

Nina

Oh yes Tracey, lol! THAT is how bad the writing is!

I knew who I was searching for when I got it, so I know the names are Samuel McCormack and Catherine Mowatt. They are the first marriage on the sheet.

Believe it or not!

Nina

Weird! When I use the link I go straight to it. Are you looking at file 91 of 114?

My tuppence worth:

1881 Fifteenth July at
Tolcross ? Parkhead Glasgow
After publication according to the forms of the United Presbyterian Church

signed Samuel McCormack tailor[journeyman] [bachelor]
19. 8 Rochester Street Glasgow
James McCormack Jeweller journeyman and
Catherine McCormack MS Japy? [ or Taffy ]

Signed Catherine Mowatt tailoress [spinster]
19. 8 Rochester Street Glasgow
John Mowatt tailor Journeyman [ deceased and
Anne Mowatt MS ?

Signed William Auld ? UP Church Tolcross
Davis McK? witness
Janet McInnes witness

Much of the confusion lies in the fact he's used fs in Tolcross
What looks like fancy J is a T.
And the book was closed before the ink on the facing page was dry !!

I see Jean manged much the same as me [below] :)

I had alook at the IGI for some clues for the parents:

There is a marriage for a John Mowatt to an Annie Gourd in Blysthwood Glasgow in 1856, a parent search threw up 3 daughters but no Catherine :?

The McCormack tribe gave zilch.

Check the census for 1881 and hopefully they will be living with their parents the few months before the wedding.

Forms of the United Presbyteriam Church
--

parents, James McCormack, jeweller (journeyman) and Catharine McCormack ms Tayg? [guessing - IGI has McTyge?]
&

parents, John Mowatt, tailor (journeyman) (deceased) and Annie Mowatt ms Gourd? [guessing this too - from IGI]
