Hello all, welcome to the New Year.
Have come across an Isabella Farley (ie) married to Robert Neillans in 1877. Registered as the "supposed daughter" of Alexander Farlie a shoemaker in Coldingham. Bit confused on this destriptive term. So far been unable to track down the BC.
Anyone help please.

Hello John
Isabella may not be registered under the supposed fathers name.....Farley and Farlie may be a spelling error.
Have you tried searching under her mothers surname?

Hello John
On the some of the marriage certificates i have where an Illigitimate child marries, when they have decided to included the "fathers" name mine have written underneath it "Reputed Father". Same thing i suppose. As Jim says you may find the answer looking for her birth under her mothers maiden name and if successful you may have a RCE to send off for

On a birth register entry for an illegitimate child the father's name could only appear in the entry if he was also present at the registration and signed the register along with the mother.........
For marriage and death register entries, however, the rules weren't so strict and "alleged" or "reputed" was allowed for the father.
