The Three Missing Sisters

Post by Janag » Sun Feb 05, 2006 12:14 am

I'm hoping that someone can help with this brickwall.

My grandfather, Robert Angus NIVEN had three sisters who seemingly have fallen off the map. They were the children of:

John Niven, 1846 - 1895 & Rebecca Arbuckle, 1852 - 1896. married 1874 in Milton Glasgow. Children all born in Glasgow.

1. Robert Angus NIVEN 1875 - 1946

2. Rebecca NIVEN 1876 - ? further info unknown (1)

3. Agnes NIVEN 1879 - ? married in 1898 to Alexander McLean
further info unknown (2)

4. Martha Kennedy NIVEN 1881 - 1952 married a Thomas McNiff

5. Margaret (Maggie) Lang NIVEN 1884 - ? further info unknown (3)

6. Lily Isabella NIVEN 1887 - 1953 never married

7. Thomas Arbuckle NIVEN 1889 - 1896

As you can see, it is Rebecca, Agnes and Margaret who I am seeking info about. I have searched quite extensively on Scotlands People to no avail.
I do know that they reached adulthood ( on later censuses ) Any knowledge of them or hints where I should go next to search would be welcome. Thanks for any help !

Cheers, Violet

Hi Violet
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot.

Just a thought - if they lived until after 1955 any deaths will not appear on Scotlands People. The deaths online only go up to 1955. Maybe they lived to a ripe old age! :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Violet

To echo what Lesley posted, my maternal grandparents were born 1879, 1882 and both lived to 1958, 1960. As they were born around the same era it wouldnt be unusual if they lived past 1955.

Of course if you cant find a DC prior to 1955, there is always the possibility they emigrated to some far flung place on the globe.

Have you tried a Death name cross check with Agnes Niven/Mclean

Hi Andrew & Lesley:

Thank you for the warm welcomes and for the 1881 census and hint regarding possible deaths after 1955. I have had people who were going to NRH take a look for me ( the post 1955 records ) They couldn't find anything, although admittedly, they didn't do a thorough check because of time constraints. Searching for marriages for Rebecca and Margaret ( Maggie) proved futile on S.P. Hopefully, something will still come up on them. Thank you again for your interest and welcome !

Cheers, Janag

Janaq

I tried a cross check for a DC of Agnes McLean/Niven 1879-1955 but no matches came up

Hi Stewy:

Thank you for your input. Yes, I did do a Niven/McLean crosscheck. Nothing came up. I'm beginning to also believe that they went to some far flung place. My grandfather Robert and the family, including my Dad came to Canada in the mid 1920s. Oh if only we had asked more questions, when they were all still alive ! The genealogist lament !

I see that you're in Australia ! I had NIVENs go there as well and they're also missing ! But that's for another time. Thank you again !

Cheers, Janag

Hello again Janaq

I thought you might have already done a search was just curious/nosey
My maternal aunt went to Canada in the 1920's too, Edmonton, Alberta.
I did get in contact with a cousin but he suddenly stopped replying, and as he was older and retired I have a feeling he may have either passed away or some other affliction strike him.

Hope you have some luck, the people here on TS are fantastic.
