WHERE TO NEXT?.....

Post by DEBS0204 » Fri Feb 10, 2006 5:34 pm

ScotlandsPeople only list births to 1905 but I wanted to look for my Grandfather, James Whelas birth. He was born September 1906, in Larkhall but as I do not know the day or his mothers maiden name, first name I think was Elizabeth, fathers name James Whelan, I cannot just order a certificate.
Can anyone tell me of another website, for Scotland births, where I can do a search.
Thanks very much, for reading this.

Hi Debs,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

A birth of September 1905 should be on ScotlandsPeople now. The 1905 births should go up to December 1905 with the exception of those whose December births were not registered until January 1906.

As spelling was not always consistent, consider using wildcards in your search, such as Whel*s (to cover for "ll" or "ss").

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello,

There is a James Whell*s born in 1905 on SP but not Larkhall. He might be worth a look.

Ah well, you'll have to wait until 2007 for 1906 to pass beyond the 100 year closure rule that is applied to birth certificates online in Scotland.

All the best,

Hi Debs,
before I found SP, I ordered a lot of certs., some with less info than you have. If you really can't wait, give it a go. You will get a partial refund if they don't find anything that looks like yours. You could jot a note on the order if you have the father's profession, which would help narrow him down.

Hi Debs
I wonder why you say that you cannot just order a certificate? :?
If you know that he was born September 1906 in Larkhall you should be able to order the certificate direct from GROS
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/bdm/index.html

I don't think there will be too many James Whelas born in 1906 but in case you do not have the correct information GROS will also do a wider search for a small charge.

Hi Debs,

How sure are you about the mother's first name? There is a marriage recorded between a James Whelan and an Agnes Munro in Larkhall in 1897. There don't appear to be any marriages between a James Whelan and an Elizabeth ? anywhere in Scotland between 1855 and 1906. A probable son of James and Agnes, Daniel Munro Whelan, was born in Larkhall in 1904 so it is possible they were still having children there in 1906.

Isobel,

Thank you so much for having a search for me.

The problem is, you believe the information that living reletives give you. Obviously the information I was given was not correct. I am now going to have a good look.

Thanks again.

Debbie
