Blake.....
Hi there
I am new to the site today and wondering if anyone can help me please. I am researching my great grandfather, Charles Blake and his family. On his marriage certificate to Clara Holdsworth 28/09/1890 in Bradford, it gives his age of being 24 years old. His father's details are Robert Blake (deceased) Sailor. I have tried to find further details of both Robert and Charles but with no luck. Charles Blake appears on the England Census of 1901 and shows he was born in 1866c in Sunderland, Durham. We have been told that Robert came from Scotland. All checks for both of them have come up negative.
Your site and particularly the members, was recommended!
Any assistance would be gratefully received.
Thank you
Christine

Hi Christine
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot!
Can you please tell us what Charles' occupation was at the time of his marriage?
Where was he in the 1901 census? There is one aged 35, born Hants Southsea Durham - a grocers manager - is this him?
In fact the more you can tell us about Charles the better!
Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you for the warm welcome and getting back to me so quickly. On his marriage certificate it states Charles is an Engine Tender. In the 1901 it records him as being a showman (fairground). In the 1891 census returns it shows him as follows:
Tan Yard Lane Caravan, Linthwaite, Yorkshire
Charles Blake, Head, 25, Living Horse Engine Fenter?, Northumberland Berwick
Clara Blake, Wife, 22, Yorkshire Bradford
RG12/3576 Pg 32
In the 1901 census he is recorded at Wakefield with Clara and their six daughters.
Thank you

Hi Christine
Have I got this right?
- if this is him in 1891, as you mentioned:
Charles Blake, Head, 25, Living Horse Engine Fenter?, Northumberland Berwick
Clara Blake, Wife, 22, Yorkshire Bradford
then surely he can't be the same chap in 1901 born in Sunderland, Durham? OR do you think one of these has been wrongly stated, heard or transcribed?
Have you found him in the 1881?
I'm stuggling here - English records are not really my "thing"! But I feel it is important to get a grip on Charles before trying to move backwards... & Free BMD seems to be down at the moment.
Sorry, lots of questions at the moment, and no answers!
Maybe someone who has access to the English records will be able help out here ...
Best wishes

Lesley thank you for your quick response.
Yes I agree it does seem rather mixed up but it is definitely the same person, so one of the censuses is probably wrong. I haven't got access to the 1881 census unfortunately. I've also wondered if he would show on the 1871 one and hopefully his parents would be on there. I'm tearing my hair out at the moment!
Once again
Many thanks
Christine

Re: Blake
Hello Christine,
nothing positive to add but a few things to clarify.
The occupation should read "engine tenter", a tenter being someone who operates or looks after something. In addition, I think that the machinery was "swing horse" and not "living horse": the writing could easily look the same.
Looks to me like the same family in both censuses: for reasons of mobility, sailors and fairground people were not the most reliable for remembering where they were when events happened.
Regards,
John

Thank you once again Lesley.
yes I managed to obtain this information last week. Clara was my mum's grandmother and the others are her great aunts and uncles. I'm also researching these too. It's my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary next month and they are having a party and have asked that people don't fetch presents, just themselfs. It will probably be the last time that we are all together as a family as some of us have been quite ill, some are quite old and some are both. I thought it would be lovely to do a family tree for my mum and dad as a present. I know they would really value that. What I want to do is put it on a flip chart near the entrance to party so that people can fill in any missing information. Also I want to do copies of it for many of the family guests.
So, you can imagine how much I appreciate yours and the other members of Scotlands People assistance.
Warmest regards
Christine
