Another Alien Abduction 1851-1879.....
In 1851 George Corstorphine b abt 1830 married to Margaret Balleny b abt 1829 are in Ratho Midlothian with daughter Margaret aged 11 months.
Another child, Georgina is born abt 1853. I have Georgina's marriage in 1879 to William Moffat Hill in Edinburgh and have them in the 1881 census in Edinburgh. m.c. states Georgina's father, George is deceased. Mother, Margaret not shown as deceased. Can't find George's death after 1855, so presumed he died before this.
My problem is I can't find Georgina in 1861 or 1871 and I can't find her mother, Margaret in 1861 of 1871 or a death for Margaret.
With a name like Corstorphine it should be easy. For 1861 I tried wildcard C*rst*r***N*, all areas. male and female, ages 6 - 11, no forename. There are 24. None resembling Georgina at all!!
Help

Hi Jean
I've not tried it...but I just wonder ...and it seems an unlikely long shot given that they are living in Edinburgh...but, is there any change some helpful enumerator might have spelt Corstorphine with a K?
Best wishes

Hi Jean
I tried the name CORSTORPHINE (no wild cards) Male/Female, no given name, Midlothian for the 1861 Census and got 33 hits. Female 15 hits, Ratho 3 hits. Keep wondering if the girls are hiding under some weird nickname. Even wondered if Georgina had been wrongly registered on the Census as George (male)!
By the way the LDS has an extracted marriage for George CORSTORPHINE & Margaret BALLENY on 24th November 1849 in Ratho.
Wish we could help.
Best wishes

Re: alien abduction
Hello Jean,
the first thing to do is to look at the deaths for Margaret Corstorphine, born about 1823 ±10. If you look at the other surnames, one will jump out and you will see that she married twice.
The second marriage will be found in the OPRs (or LDS), but use a wildcard such as BALL*N*.
The family were recorded under her new married name in 1861 and 1871, but you will need to be imaginative with wildcards. However, they did not stray from Prestonkirk and Ratho areas.
Regards,
John

Another Alien Abduction 1851 - 1879
Hi Jean,
There is one possibility for your Margaret Balleny b, abt 1829, on the 1881 census, there is a Margaret Corstorphine, a Widow, aged 58, which would make the birth circa 1823, born Cramond, Edinburgh, and the Parishes of Cramond & Ratho are only 5 miles apart. This Margaret is working as a Housekeeper for William J. Black (Surgeon Major retired) at 2 George Square, Edinburgh
