BMD's.....

Post by Debrs » Fri Mar 03, 2006 9:12 pm

How can I find details of recent BMD's in New Register House? If I want to find an English BMD from 1837 to the present date, I can pop along to my local library and search through the index myself. I use SP regularly, but I wasn't sure if I could do this in Scotland with more recent items.

In New Register House (NRH), the index should be up to date into 2006. The records are there at least up to 2003 (last time I was there). There is a delay in them being submitted to NRH, as they have to be examined and approved first. That is done by a small team, and hence the last year or two's records are normally able to be viewed in the Registrar's office where they were issued.

Up to 2003 are available on the DIGROS system, the NRH inhouse version of ScotlandsPeople. The only thing on SP that is not available on the DIGROS system is the 1861 census, which I am told will not be available online there until the computer system is upgraded. That will presumably apply equally to the 1841 and 1851 censuses when they come online at SP.

There are many items available on microfilm or microfiche if they are not on the DIGROS system - post 1984 divorces, minor records, service returns, RCEs, adoption records (restricted to maximum of 3 per visit), census and OPRs.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

It was recently agreed in principle that indexes, but indexes only - i.e .no images, for records not presently on line at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk will also be put on line.

Timescale?, - ask GROS :!:
